Choosing a terracotta facade panel supplier is a risk decision covering product fit, manufacturing control, engineering boundaries, evidence, programme and long-term replacement. A company profile can introduce the business, but due diligence must connect every capability claim to the legal entity, factory, product, production window and project scope being offered.
Separate the 2015 profile from current capability
The archived page dated 13 July 2015 promoted LOPO’s price, durability, low panel weight, fixing system, customisation, finish range, weather resistance and testing. It also quoted maximum dimensions and a weight per square metre. These are historical marketing and product claims; they must not be treated as current limits, approvals or guarantees.
Ask for a new project data sheet and dated evidence for the exact profile, finish, span and fixing. The same rule applies to any old “largest,” “leading,” factory-area, workforce, output or market-ranking statement found elsewhere: retain it only as a dated archive reference unless current, verifiable records define the metric and scope.
Verify identity, manufacturing scope and accountability
Match the quotation, contract entity, bank beneficiary, export documents, factory identity and warranty issuer. Establish whether the bidder manufactures the terracotta, supplies a coordinated support system, acts as an exporter, or combines several roles. List any subcontracted extrusion, glazing, metalwork, testing or engineering.
A factory review should follow the proposed product route from raw-material receipt through preparation, extrusion, drying, firing, finishing, dimensional inspection, colour sorting, packing and release. Record the lines and equipment relevant to this order—not unrelated facilities. Confirm who can stop nonconforming production, approve concessions and communicate design changes to the customer.
If a physical audit is not proportionate at the shortlist stage, request a live, structured remote review with dated records and named participants. Treat edited promotional video as orientation only. Before a material order, agree whether the buyer, facade consultant or independent inspector may witness the critical production and release points.
Look behind quality certificates
Certificate check
Request the full standard reference and edition, certificate number, legal name, covered sites, activity scope, issue and expiry dates, and certification body.
Process check
Review incoming-material control, approved recipes, tooling records, firing traceability, gauges, calibration, inspection plans and release authority.
Nonconformance check
Ask how defects are quarantined, investigated and corrected, and how affected batches or shipped orders can be traced.
Project check
Agree hold points for first-off pieces, colour range, dimensions, packing and pre-shipment inspection, with named acceptance responsibility.
ISO itself does not certify companies. Its certification guidance recommends checking the certification body and accreditation status. A management-system certificate supports confidence in processes, but it does not prove that a particular terracotta panel meets the project specification.
Build a product and test-evidence matrix
| Evidence item | Due-diligence question | Acceptance record |
|---|---|---|
| Product data | Does it identify the proposed profile, body, finish, dimensions, tolerances, mass and support condition? | Approved project data sheet and coded sample |
| Test report | Does the method, specimen, orientation, span and result match the design need and local requirement? | Complete report with current status and stated limitations |
| Laboratory | Is the laboratory competent for the relevant method, and does any accreditation scope actually include that work? | Laboratory identity and applicable scope |
| System engineering | Who calculates panels, clips, rails, brackets, anchors and substrate interfaces for project loads? | Responsibility matrix, calculations and reviewed drawings |
ISO/IEC 17025:2017, confirmed current by ISO in 2023, addresses testing-laboratory competence; accreditation still needs to be checked against the relevant activity. Reject cropped certificates, report summaries without specimen details, and test data from a different product presented as though it were directly transferable.
Prove design support and custom-product control
Send representative elevations, sections, loads and target module, then assess the response. A capable team should identify standard sections, practical lengths, support points, edge restrictions, movement clearances, corner strategies and unresolved interfaces. For a custom extrusion, require a feasibility review, tooling drawing, prototype plan, tolerances, minimum quantity, approval sequence and treatment of later replacement orders.
Evaluate colour work through physical range samples and a mock-up, not a digital image or one ideal piece. Confirm how approved references are stored, how batches are blended, what happens when raw materials or process settings change, and who authorises a deviation.
Test capacity against the actual programme
General production-capacity figures are not a delivery plan. Ask for available line allocation during the quoted window, expected output for the specific profile and finish, tooling and changeover time, quality yield assumptions, maintenance shutdowns and buffer before shipment. Connect each date to approval of drawings, samples, tests and deposit conditions.
Request a recovery scenario for rejected first-off production, colour-range disagreement, damaged crates or transport delay. Review packing design, panel identification, container loading, moisture protection, unloading method and the sequence needed on site. Confirm Incoterms, insurance responsibilities, documents, duties and who controls each handover.
Score the supplier on evidence and close-out support
Use a weighted matrix covering technical fit, quality controls, evidence, engineering, communication, production plan, logistics, commercial terms and aftercare. Record qualifications and exclusions beside price. Before award, close material and system scope, current documents, mock-ups, hold points, inspection access, warranty terms, spare units and the process for future replacements.
Reference checks should relate to a comparable panel type, finish, quantity, climate and delivery model. Ask the project contact about submittals, colour control, packing, response to nonconformance and replacement service. A list of landmark names or photographs does not by itself confirm the supplier’s exact role or the customer’s experience.
Read the LOPO company introduction as background, then verify project-specific claims independently. Review terracotta rainscreen options and relevant work in the project gallery before issuing the evidence checklist.
