Warm terracotta surfaces shape the museum’s sheltered elevations

Six complete archive photographs record a coordinated palette of terracotta panels and vertical louvers around Tongchuan Museum’s inner and courtyard-facing walls. The project record supports several historical finishes and item references, while quantities, attachment details and complete contract records remain unavailable.

A comprehensive museum within Tongchuan’s civic landscape

A contemporary China National Radio report records approval in 2016, construction beginning in July 2017, the main structure topping out in December 2018 and the museum’s first public opening on 18 May 2020. A Shaanxi Daily opening report identifies the completed institution as a comprehensive museum for Tongchuan’s history, culture and urban development.

The museum’s “Shanshui City” concept combines intersecting internal streets with a moving outer layer. The opening report records a separate wind-driven facade of about 110,000 metal pieces over roughly 3,800 m². Those are metal-screen figures, not terracotta product quantities. The warm terracotta panels and louvers documented here occupy sheltered inner and courtyard-facing wall fields visible in the six archive images.

Dates and areas require source labels

A 2017 Tongchuan Development and Reform Commission update described 24,000 m² of total construction area, including 23,000 m² for the museum, during early construction. The 2020 opening report gives a 60,000 m² site and a 31,000 m² building area for the opened complex. These may reflect different project stages or scope definitions; this archive cannot reconcile them.

None of the 60,000, 31,000, 24,000, 23,000, 12,000 or 3,800 m² figures is a documented terracotta cladding area. The reviewed sources contain no bill of quantities or panel/louver count, so the replacement does not convert building, exhibition or metal-screen areas into a ceramic quantity.

What the LOPO material record actually supports

LOPO’s current Tongchuan Museum project archive identifies terracotta panels with transparent droplet-glaze, combed and sandblasted surface treatments, together with terracotta louvers. It publishes item references FRD3020576, FHD3020576 and FLD3020576 and a single 300 × 20 mm size line.

The page does not map each code to a specific photographed panel or louver, define whether 300 × 20 mm is a face/depth section, list length or thickness, or provide a dated approved schedule. These identifiers are therefore preserved as historical archive references only. Current availability, dimensions, finish ranges and substitutions must be confirmed against a current project response and approved samples.

Panels

Images support warm orange-to-brown panel fields, horizontal joints and more than one surface appearance. They do not establish clay-body codes, thickness, module lengths, tolerances or batch limits.

Droplet finish

The close image records raised clear droplets over a lined surface. It supports visual description, not adhesion, weathering, cleaning, slip, UV or impact performance.

Vertical louvers

Straight and curved screen fields create depth around openings. Photographs do not reveal spans, internal reinforcement, connectors, anchors, movement allowances or load capacity.

Design, construction and LOPO role boundaries

LOPO’s Chinese project page attributes the architecture to 西安建筑科技大学建筑设计研究院有限公司, rendered here as Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. This attribution was not independently recovered from the institute or a public tender record, so it remains clearly tied to the LOPO archive. The reviewed public sources did not identify the general contractor, facade contractor or terracotta installer.

LOPO’s first-party article and project page identify the terracotta panels and louvers as LOPO products and describe finish and colour development with the architects. That supports a historical LOPO product-development/manufacturing account. No purchase order, delivery schedule, installation contract, test package, warranty or as-built schedule was reviewed, so the replacement does not expand LOPO’s role into design responsibility, installation, testing or whole-facade performance.

Evidence to request for a comparable facade

Resolve the approved product schedule

Map every current code to product family, profile, face dimensions, depth, length, thickness, mass, surface, colour range and intended location. Treat the three archive codes and 300 × 20 mm line as historical until confirmed.

Define interfaces and responsibilities

Coordinate panel and louver supports, brackets, rails, substrate, openings, joints, drainage, movement, corrosion, cavity/fire strategy, access and replacement with the responsible architect, facade consultant, engineer, contractor and suppliers.

Approve appearance at useful scale

Review physical samples and representative mock-ups for droplet distribution, combing, sandblasting, colour variation, curved louver fields, corners, glazing interfaces and lighting. Retain agreed benchmarks and acceptance records.

Verify the project assembly

Use project calculations, tests, inspections and approved documents for loads, impact, water, fire, thermal movement, durability, cleaning and maintenance. Photographs and a supplier case-study page cannot approve another assembly.

Case-study limits

  • The formal project is Tongchuan Museum in Shaanxi; “Musician” and “Museum of China” are not retained as project names.
  • Construction start and public opening are supported; LOPO’s 2019 label is not presented as the building completion date.
