Terracotta wall facade tiles should be selected through three separate decisions: facade composition, exact product identity and a verified wall-system route. “Postmodern,” “retro,” “natural” or “earthy” may help describe an intended atmosphere, but none identifies a tile, confirms exterior suitability or proves how a facade will perform.
The four 2022 archive photographs below show an unidentified interior with narrow, earth-toned vertical units around piers, a curved edge, a branded wall and a stair. The archive gives no project name, location, designer, photographer, manufacturer, product code or construction detail. The photographs are therefore retained as unattributed interior composition references—not as a postmodern building, exterior facade or LOPO installation.

When is “postmodern” a defensible project description?
Postmodernism is a historical and critical category, not a synonym for warm colours or old-looking surfaces. The Royal Institute of British Architects describes postmodern architecture through its late-20th-century reaction to modernism, eclecticism, colour, historical allusion, symbolism and playfulness. The Victoria and Albert Museum emphasises complexity, contradiction, vivid colour, theatricality and deliberate manipulation of surfaces.
A responsible page should use the label only when the project’s authors, client brief or credible architectural history supports it. Then identify the evidence: chronology, composition, historical quotation, sign/symbol, ornament, colour, material juxtaposition, irony or another documented design move. Vertical earth-toned units alone do not establish that lineage.
Documented attribution
Best evidence: a project page, drawing, interview or publication that names the designer and explains the intent in context.
Formal analysis
Useful when transparent: describe observable hierarchy, quotation, symbolism, colour and composition without claiming the architect’s intent.
Visual resemblance
A comparison may inspire a brief, but it should be labelled as interpretation and must not become project identity or history.
Marketing tag
“Postmodern-style tile” is not a product class, exterior-use declaration, system route or performance result.

Translate an atmosphere into a dimensioned facade composition
The first photograph can support a composition brief: slender vertical proportions, repeated bands, limited warm colours, small tone shifts between adjacent faces and a joint grid that turns around piers. It cannot supply a facade module. Before product selection, draw the intended elevations and key views at real scale.
Composition drawing checklist
- Set primary datums at base, floor lines, parapet, openings and changes of material.
- Dimension unit orientation, coursing, joint alignment, colour distribution and the treatment of cut units.
- Resolve external and internal corners, returns, soffits, sills, heads, jambs, copings and terminations.
- Map flat, recessed and projecting zones and the viewing distances at which the pattern should read.
- Coordinate facade pattern with the support grid, movement strategy, drainage paths, fire stops and replacement zones.
Do not choose a product because a catalogue thumbnail looks similar. A range board and full-scale mock-up should test colour distribution, texture, joint shadow, relief and viewing distance under the project’s actual light and weather.

Curves, ledges and returns expose the real system
A curve can be formed by small standard units, tapered or shaped pieces, segmented backing, factory-made panels or another finish entirely. The photograph does not reveal which route is used. For an exterior wall, set the design radius and allowable faceting, then coordinate unit width, joint opening, backing geometry, substrate tolerance, cut edges and replacement.
Horizontal ledges and deep returns also interrupt support and weather control. Detail slopes, drips, flashing or drainage, movement joints, interfaces and cleaning access for the selected facade route. A smooth interior ledge cannot be copied as an exterior sill without project-specific water and load design.

Treat signs, lights and services as facade interfaces
Branding and lighting can turn a material field into a recognisable place, but every penetration, recess and attachment needs coordination. On an exterior facade, record who supports the sign or luminaire, how loads return to structure, how membranes and cavities remain continuous, how fixings avoid damaging units and how components can be inspected or replaced.
Colour appearance also depends on source type, direction, intensity, wetness, neighbouring materials and camera processing. Approve samples under day and night conditions rather than promising a fixed colour from one image. Lighting can reveal texture; it does not verify slip, acoustic absorption, solar reflectance or “light-pollution reduction.”

Design occupied edges for contact, impact and maintenance
At stairs, entrances, terraces and public routes, coordinate the finish with handrails, guards, skirtings, nosings, door frames, cleaning equipment and likely impact. Use the project’s accessibility and safety rules for clear width, guarding, surface contrast, openings and changes in level. A wall photograph provides no compliant dimension.
Where units extend overhead or above occupied space, the project team must address support, falling-object consequences, redundancy or retention where required, inspections and safe replacement. Interior adhesion seen in a precedent is not evidence for exterior wind, seismic, thermal or moisture actions.

As one international classification route, ISO 13006:2018 defines ceramic-tile terms, classifications, characteristics and marking and points to the ISO 10545 test series. ISO currently lists a replacement edition under development, so confirm the governing edition and project jurisdiction. The standard does not classify every brick, panel, trim or shaped accessory and does not identify the archived units.
For fired-clay thin brick, the Brick Industry Association’s Technical Note 28C illustrates why thick-set, thin-set, modular and prefabricated routes cannot be treated as one attachment detail. It is United States guidance for fired-clay brick, not a declaration for the pictured material or a substitute for local design.

Fire, structural safety, wind, seismic action, thermal/acoustic performance, weather resistance, durability, emissions and environmental impact belong to identified products and complete assemblies under named scopes. Do not transfer an interior photograph or a style word into any of those claims.
Build the approval package from composition to construction
- State the design intent. Use dimensioned elevations, sections, colour distribution and junction sketches; cite a style only when its source and relevance are clear.
- Freeze product identity. Record manufacturer, exact code, product type, forming route, dimensions/tolerances, finish, colour range, lot and declared intended use.
- Select the system route. Issue coordinated support, fixing, backing, cavity, membrane, insulation, fire-stop, drainage, movement and interface details.
- Map exposure and actions. Zone wind/seismic where applicable, wetting, frost/salts, heat/solar exposure, impact, occupied areas, pollutants, cleaning and access.
- Align evidence. Require current declarations/reports for the exact offered product or representative assembly under named methods and project acceptance criteria.
- Mock up and retain controls. Approve a range board and full-scale visual mock-up; add performance mock-ups when specified and retain the accepted sample, lot log and inspection records.
The archive supplies four complete interior images and an unsupported narrative only. It does not publish the project identity, style authorship, product, manufacturer, dimensions, quantity, exterior system, test report or LOPO contract; none is invented in this replacement.

Share the elevations, module, colour range, curves and junctions, substrate/support, exposure, quantity, maintenance strategy and governing standards.
