Terracotta breeze block procurement starts by naming the product, use and supporting system precisely. “Breeze block,” “screen block” and “jali” can describe overlapping visual or functional ideas, but none alone confirms material composition, unit classification, structural capacity, exterior suitability or an approved installation route.
This guide begins where an early design brief ends: converting a desired openwork pattern into a controlled product schedule, evidence list, sample range, system responsibility matrix and purchase record. Separate the product identity from the design name

LOPO’s current Jali product page declares its named family to be non-load-bearing screen elements. Treat that as an intended-use statement for the identified current products, not as a blanket rule for every object marketed as a breeze block. The quotation and submittal must tie the declaration to the exact item, drawing, manufacturing site and revision.

Create one controlled identity line for every proposed unit: manufacturer and manufacturing site; exact item/custom reference and revision; body/material declaration; intended use; full face/depth/opening geometry and tolerances; unit mass; finish and colour range; orientation; relevant standard/test basis; and production availability. If any field is absent, mark it unresolved rather than borrowing it from a similar image or another product page.
Define the application before selecting the unit
The same pattern may be proposed for an interior feature, an external screen, a framed facade panel or a freestanding wall, but those are different assemblies. Record location, height, span, openings and edges, occupancy, access, exposure and the construction behind or around the screen before requesting a quotation.
Interior partition or display
Resolve base/top/side restraint, accidental impact, circulation clearances, fire and egress interfaces, overhead risk, attachments, cleaning and replacement. Display objects inside openings are a separate use and safety decision.
Exterior freestanding screen
Resolve foundations or supporting structure, wind/seismic and other applicable actions, lateral stability, free edges, joints, drainage, top protection, exposure, impact and access. A low wall in a photograph is not a height or restraint precedent.
Secondary facade layer
Resolve the complete load path, frames/anchors, differential movement, falling-fragment risk, interfaces, cavity access, water management, fire strategy and replacement. An open layer is not the building’s air, water or thermal barrier.
Balcony, edge or guard zone
Do not assume a patterned screen can act as a guard. The responsible team must verify applicable loads, openings, climbability, impact, retention, fragment risk, support and local approvals for the exact assembly.
Wet, poolside or coastal location
Assess wetting/drying, salts and chemicals, staining, efflorescence, corrosion of adjacent support, slip/edge conditions, cleaning and drainage using configuration- and exposure-matched evidence.
Freeze-thaw exposure
Confirm the exact unit body’s declared properties, saturation conditions, project climate, detailing and applicable test/acceptance basis. A fired-clay appearance or exterior photograph is not freeze-thaw approval.

Do not let one document stand in for another. A product data sheet describes a unit; an approved sample controls appearance; a structural calculation addresses a defined assembly and load case; a fire or exposure report has a stated specimen and scope; and an order fixes commercial fields. Record every revision and confirm that all documents refer to the same item and configuration.
Select and engineer the complete screen system
Mortared masonry, bonded units, reinforcement, framed/dry-supported panels and other routes have different design assumptions. This page does not approve any one route or provide universal mortar, adhesive, reinforcement, spacing, joint, curing or height instructions. The manufacturer, architect, structural/facade engineer, fire specialist, enclosure consultant and installer must coordinate the exact proposal and applicable local requirements.
System boundary: verify gravity and lateral load paths; base/top/side restraint; frames, anchors and substrates; unit bearing and local support zones; movement and joints; corrosion and material compatibility; handling and installation tolerances; guard and falling-fragment risks; water shedding/drainage; fire strategy and cavity stopping; adjacent membranes/insulation; openings, corners and free edges; access, cleaning and replacement. Openwork geometry does not resolve any of these by itself.

Use a representative full-scale mock-up to test the coordinated reality: pattern and rotations, joint rhythm, corners and terminations, cumulative tolerances, support visibility, handling, accidental damage, lighting/views, water behaviour where relevant, installation sequence, cleaning access and removal/replacement. Mock-up approval must cite the exact unit, batch/finish range, supporting system and acceptance criteria.

Lock manufacturer/site, item and revision, body, dimensions, finish, intended use and availability without importing data from lookalikes.

Develop the complete support, restraint, movement, safety, water and fire strategy and configuration-matched calculations/tests.

Approve master/boundary samples and a representative mock-up with written viewing, dimensional and technical criteria.
Release
Align drawings, evidence, order, quality plan, batch controls, inspection hold points, packing and delivery before manufacture.
Record
Retain batches, inspections, deviations, as-built locations, cleaning/maintenance information and labelled replacement stock.

The old article’s low-carbon, insulation, energy-saving, weather-resistant, low-maintenance and decades-long durability claims had no identified product, system, method or report and are not repeated. Ask for current product- and plant-specific environmental documentation, configuration-matched performance evidence and project maintenance instructions. There is no universal mild detergent, sealer, cleaning interval or annual inspection rule for every screen.
