An unglazed terracotta clay thick brick should be chosen as one component of an engineered paving assembly, not from an archive photograph or a thickness label alone. Unit geometry, support, loads, water management, joints and workmanship determine whether the finished surface is appropriate for its location.

Archive boundary: the original 2013 page described a 115 × 115 × 12 mm natural-clay floor tile, packed in cartons on pallets for floor paving, and used broad claims including acid resistance, antibacterial action, heat insulation, non-slip, firebrick and wear resistance. It also showed an incomplete “GB/T19001-2000/ISO9001:200” reference. These words are historical catalogue content, not current product, assembly or certification evidence. Confirm every dimension, application and performance requirement for the proposed order.

Confirm what “thick brick” identifies

Begin with a current product code and dimensioned drawing. The drawing should state length, width, actual thickness, edge form, surface, rear profile, manufacturing tolerances and unit mass. Ask whether the archived designation remains available, is made only for a minimum quantity, or has been replaced by a related paver. A similar colour or face does not establish equivalent geometry.

Record the intended orientation and any special pieces needed at edges, steps, drains and transitions. Compare a current sample with the drawing and, for refurbishment work, with measured units from the existing pavement. This simple check can expose differences that affect levels, joints, cutting and compatibility with the proposed bedding system.

Translate use into design actions

Describe the area precisely: interior or exterior, covered or exposed, pedestrian only or exposed to service vehicles, dry or frequently wet, level or sloped, and heated or unheated. Identify expected point loads, wheeled equipment, cleaning machinery, de-icing materials, contaminants and freeze–thaw conditions where relevant. The responsible designer should set the criteria for the actual project and jurisdiction.

Do not infer load capacity from thickness. The unit, bond, joints, bedding or adhesive, base, substrate and edge restraint act together. Ask the project engineer and paving-system suppliers to coordinate the build-up, including interfaces at structures, covers, drainage channels and adjacent materials.

Define substrate preparation, falls, waterproofing where required, bedding or adhesive, joint material and curing.

Flexible route

Define formation, sub-base, laying course, edge restraint and jointing through the project pavement design.

Water route

Show where water lands, travels and drains without trapping moisture at thresholds or interfaces.

Movement route

Coordinate structural, field, perimeter and isolation joints instead of allowing the surface pattern to conceal them.

Installation instructions must match the selected brick and system. A generic online detail cannot resolve project-specific loads, drainage, substrate movement or local requirements. Before work begins, approve the assembly drawing, material data and a representative trial area.

Request exact surface performance evidence

For slip, state the required test method, surface condition and classification. “Non-slip” alone is incomplete, particularly around entrances, ramps or continuously wet areas. For abrasion, breaking load, absorption, chemical exposure and freeze–thaw behaviour, request current reports that identify the tested code, dimensions and finish. Check whether the result applies to the exact order.

An antibacterial claim needs a defined method, organism, result and scope; the archived label supplies none of these. Likewise, “heat insulation” and “firebrick” do not establish thermal or fire performance for a completed pavement. The design team should determine which evidence is relevant and how it must be documented.

Approve appearance as a fired range

Unglazed fired clay can be selected for variation, but the accepted range still needs control. Review several current units for body colour, tone, texture, edges, dimensions and warpage. Approve a labelled sample set or larger dry layout rather than a single perfect piece. Record the permitted blend and any exclusions.

Use the trial area to assess bond, joint width and colour, transitions, cuts, surface level and visual rhythm under project lighting. It should also test the intended cleaning process and any proposed treatment. If a sealer is considered, verify compatibility and evaluate its effect on colour, slip and maintenance before approval.

Control production, delivery and installation

Create inspection points for dimensions, squareness, warpage, edges, cracks and appearance. State sampling, acceptance and nonconformance procedures. Keep approved samples and documents tied to the same product code and revision. The terracotta floor tile range can support preliminary selection, subject to current product confirmation.

Plan pallet weights and dimensions, lifting access, delivery sequence and dry protected storage. At site, log batches and delivery condition; verify the base or substrate before installation; and record weather, trial approval, levels, joints and protection. Do not open all pallets into one uncontrolled pile if batch traceability matters.

Release and hand over a coordinated order

Before release, align the product code, drawing, approved range, quantities, wastage basis, specials, spares, assembly, evidence, packing and programme. Separate supply, freight, installation materials, testing and site work in the commercial schedule so quotations can be compared on equal scope. Resolve responsibilities for mock-ups, replacement and rejected material.

Handover records should identify installed batches and locations, final drawings, approved cleaning method, maintenance plan and spare inventory.
