Library of the College of Science & Technology, Ningbo University
This project case study records how a brick-red LOPO terracotta rainscreen was used on the library at the university’s Cixi campus. The original project information identifies an approximately 23,000 m² library and a supply of nearly 5,000 m² of terracotta panels.
Campus context in Cixi
The College of Science & Technology relocated to the Cixi Science and Education Park in 2019. Its campus is reported at 273,500 m² and was planned to accommodate 10,000 students and teachers. The original project record lists total campus investment at RMB 2,533 million.
The wider campus program includes the library, classrooms, faculty buildings, student dormitories, an international exchange center and supporting service facilities. A central sunken square, waterscape and gently sloping green areas organize shared outdoor space, while the north and south campus complexes are connected by the site layout described in the original record.
A central library with a clear, symmetrical façade
The library stands on the central axis of the campus. The project description records a rectangular building with eight floors above ground and one below ground. Regular window openings divide the elevations symmetrically, while glazing at the atrium and the north and south entrances brings daylight toward the center of the building.
That restrained geometry gives the brick-red cladding a consistent architectural role: it frames the regular window pattern and connects the library visually with the material palette used across the campus.
Brick-red materials create continuity across the campus
The original article describes a campus-wide brick-red façade palette using thin brick, face brick and terracotta panels. On the library, the terracotta rainscreen carries that shared colour language onto a larger, modern building volume.
The different clay façade formats are presented as coordinated parts of one architectural composition. Rather than treating the library as an isolated object, the material choice helps it relate to the other teaching, residential and service buildings in the campus plan.
