Once an exterior terracotta panel concept passes preliminary suitability screening, the next task is to define where it will be used and what evidence each facade zone requires. A building-type label such as office, theatre, venue, commercial or residential does not specify a facade. Field walls, openings, corners, bases, parapets, soffits and projecting features impose different geometry, exposure, support and maintenance questions.
This guide converts those application zones into a specification evidence matrix. It does not approve a product, publish a universal detail or repeat generic benefit claims. Every conclusion must trace to the exact panel, finish, fixing route, complete wall build-up, project conditions and responsible design approval.

Classify the facade by application zone
Mark every zone on the elevations and details before requesting final product data. The purpose is not to generate a standard solution; it is to reveal where a nominal field panel stops being sufficient and where special units, extra engineering, testing or another material route may be needed.
| Facade zone | Application-specific question | Evidence to schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Field wall | Can the proposed module, orientation and joint pattern accommodate loads, tolerances and movement across the repeated elevation? | Panel/profile drawings, layout, mass, tolerances, support/load-path calculations, movement strategy and representative assembly tests. |
| Openings | How do heads, jambs and sills coordinate support, drainage, air/water layers, fire stopping, window movement and cleaning? | Coordinated perimeter details, flashings, membranes, interfaces, sequencing, mock-up locations and project water/air acceptance evidence. |
| Corners and returns | Are special corner units, mitres, open joints or exposed body edges intended, and can the support maintain the geometry? | Full-size corner samples, edge/return coverage, permitted cuts, joint/rail continuity, tolerances, replacement access and visual acceptance limits. |
| Base and impact zones | What contact, splash, salt, soil, debris, vandalism, vehicle or maintenance-equipment exposure applies? | Project impact and exposure review, clearances, drainage, protective strategy, access, cleaning trials, replacement method and spare quantities. |
| Parapets, soffits and projections | How do orientation, gravity, wind pressure/suction, runoff, falling-object risk and access change? | Zone-specific engineering, retention, edge and soffit details, flashings, cavity/fire continuity, inspection access and testing where required. |
| Feature or texture bands | Do relief, orientation changes, mixed formats or colours alter mass, support offsets, joint logic, water shedding and batch appearance? | Mapped panel IDs, profiles, boundary samples, oriented mock-up, special supports, batch/pallet plan, installed-location record and spares. |
| Material transitions | How does the panel system meet glazing, metal, masonry, roof, landscape or another rainscreen without creating a responsibility gap? | Interface matrix, compatible materials, movement and drainage paths, thermal/corrosion review, sequencing, responsible detail owner and sign-off. |
Lock the exact evidence object
“Terracotta panel” is not a sufficient submittal identity. The schedule must connect one proposed product and finish to one support configuration and one wall build-up. If any of those changes, identify which calculations, drawings, samples, reports, mock-ups and approvals require revision.
Panel identity
Record manufacturer, plant, item/profile, body, dimensions, tolerances, mass, front/back, orientation, fixing zones and permitted configurations.
Finish identity
Record surface route, colour and texture range, gloss, batch limits, edge/return treatment, approved samples and cleaning restrictions.
Support route
Identify clips/carriers, rails, brackets, anchors, fasteners, isolators, substrate and complete load path; do not infer them from a facade image.
Backing wall
Coordinate air/water control, insulation, vapour strategy, cavity drainage/ventilation, flashings and fire barriers at each application zone.
Interfaces
List openings, corners, bases, roofs, penetrations and adjoining materials, with movement, compatibility, drainage and detail ownership.
Evidence scope
State whether each document covers a material, panel, component, support assembly, interface or complete wall—and whether it matches this project.
Build a traceable specification evidence register
Issue a live register with the specification rather than collecting unrelated brochures after selection. Each row should name the requirement, responsible author/reviewer, exact product or assembly, standard and version, configuration, exposure, result or classification, report date, limitations, project relevance and acceptance status.
| Package | What the project must resolve | Do not infer from |
|---|---|---|
| Geometry and appearance | Current drawings, tolerances, layout, orientation, joints, corners, cuts, colour/texture boundary samples, mock-up and acceptance criteria. | A catalogue thumbnail, one loose sample or a photograph under unknown light. |
| Structure and retention | Self-weight, wind, seismic where applicable, impact, movements, substrates, anchors, supports, panel engagement and falling-object risk. | Fired-clay identity, hollow shape, “dry-hung” wording or a generic fixing sketch. |
| Water, air and moisture | Rain shedding, cavity drainage/ventilation, flashings, air/water layers, vapour/condensation analysis, openings and transitions. | The face material, an open joint or claims of moisture resistance or ventilation. |
| Fire and thermal | Required component/assembly classifications, cavity barriers, insulation/membrane/subframe contributions, thermal bridges and complete-wall calculation. | A panel-only fire result, kiln temperature, material label or generic energy claim. |
| Exposure and durability | Project-relevant freeze-thaw, colour/weathering, chemical/salt, impact, corrosion, compatibility and cleaning/maintenance evidence. | “Natural,” “long-lasting,” “no radiation,” “self-cleaning” or another unsupported adjective. |
| Environment and health | Current declarations tied to manufacturer, plant, exact product, declared unit, life-cycle modules, method, issue date and validity. | Clay origin, theoretical recyclability or an unscoped green/energy-saving statement. |
| Delivery and replacement | Lead-time basis, quantities, waste allowance, mapped batches/pallets, handling, installed locations, access, replacement sequence and labelled spares. | A promise that every mechanically fixed panel is automatically easy or economical to replace. |
The old article called terracotta the latest or next mainstream material and assigned environmental protection, energy saving, moisture resistance, sound insulation, ventilation, lasting colour, easy replacement and broad application to it without a named product, complete system or report. Those statements are not retained as evidence. Project documentation—not the material name—must establish each required outcome.

Record a proceed, revise or alternate-route decision
The register should end in a visible decision for every facade zone—not an unresolved list of missing documents. Name the person or discipline authorized to accept the product, system and interface evidence, and preserve the decision basis through design changes and substitutions.
- every facade zone, interface and special condition marked on coordinated elevations and details;
- the exact panel, finish, support and complete wall identity with controlled revisions;
- current reports and calculations whose configurations and limitations match the proposal;
- boundary samples and a representative mock-up with written acceptance criteria;
- responsibility for design, review, testing, authority submissions, installation records and change control; and
- access, inspection, cleaning, replacement, as-built mapping and spare-material requirements.
Commercial, office, theatre, venue and residential facades can each contain several of these zones. Their use labels neither approve terracotta nor predict performance. Apply the same evidence matrix to the actual height, geometry, exposure, substrate, wall build-up, regulations and maintenance plan.
