Glazed terracotta colour planning begins with a family, an elevation role and an approved visual range—not a promise of “any colour.” Hue, value, chroma, gloss, texture, geometry, light and viewing distance interact across a facade. A small idealised sample cannot control that whole field.
This guide turns colour intent into an elevation zoning and range-approval record. Detailed glaze/crazing, pearlescent, crackle, artwork and corrugated-finish questions remain on their dedicated pages; this page owns how several approved appearances are distributed and reviewed together.

Define colour families by role, not by adjective
“Vibrant,” “natural,” “metallic,” “blue” or “white” is too broad for approval. Give each family a project code and state where it belongs, how it relates to adjacent families and which aspects may vary. The project code should point to a controlled product/finish record; it must not be mistaken for a manufacturer’s current SKU.
| Family role | Design intent to record | Approval boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Primary field | Dominant value, colour direction, gloss/texture character and acceptable visual continuity across the largest zones. | Approve representative range, distribution and lighting—not one perfect piece or a screen image. |
| Secondary field | A related family used to distinguish wings, levels, courtyards or program zones without breaking the overall composition. | Define adjacency, transition, quantity by elevation and whether batches may mix; do not rely on a verbal “similar” instruction. |
| Accent | Limited colour or sheen at entries, recesses, frames or selected bays, with a clear hierarchy and maximum visual extent set by the design team. | Confirm small-quantity feasibility, replacement stock and how an accent terminates at corners/openings. |
| Transition | Intermediate tones or a controlled blend between families, materials, sun/shade conditions or building volumes. | Issue a distribution map and representative module; random placement is not a control method. |
| Optical-effect family | Pearlescent, metallic-look, iridescent or strongly glossy appearance considered under directional light and changing view angle. | Approve from multiple angles and day/night conditions; the name does not prove composition, reflectance, durability or consistent colour travel. |
| Replacement reserve | Labelled spares aligned to family, product, finish, batch/range and as-built zone. | Future remanufacture may not match; set storage, identification and replacement strategy before handover. |

Map every family to an elevation zone
A colour schedule becomes useful only when it is tied to marked drawings. Record zone limits, quantities, orientation, level, grid lines, panel/profile identity, corners, openings and transition rules. Resolve changes where they are visible and buildable rather than leaving an installer to interpret a rendering.
Sun and shade
Review the same family on each orientation and beneath overhangs. Gloss, texture and directional profiles can shift apparent colour without a material change.
Base and public contact
Separate appearance intent from impact, staining, splash, cleaning and replacement criteria. A darker colour is not evidence of easier maintenance.
Openings and recesses
Show jamb/head/sill returns, shadows, cut edges, joint colour and adjacent glazing/metal. Small transition pieces need exact identity and finish coverage.
Corners and curves
State whether colour wraps, changes or terminates. Approve the actual profile/orientation because curvature and rib direction alter highlights and visual value.
Material interfaces
Review colour beside stone, brick, metal, glass, sealant and soffits under representative light. Digital collages do not control on-site adjacency.
Maintenance and replacements
Map access, cleaning zones and replaceable units. Keep the as-built family/product/batch record and labelled spares linked to exact locations.

Approve a visual range, not a single swatch
Reference
Record design imagery as intent only, with source/rights and the specific attributes being pursued.
Identify
Confirm manufacturer/site, exact unit/profile, body, finish/glaze system, colour family code, current feasibility and revision.
Bound
Approve master and boundary samples for hue/value/chroma, gloss, texture, marks, edges and any intended variation.
Compose
Build a representative multi-unit panel showing joints, orientation, family distribution and tolerance accumulation.
Locate
Review a full-scale elevation zone or mock-up with corners/openings, adjacent materials and representative day/night viewing.
Control
Link approved range, drawings, batches, placement map, inspections, NCRs, as-builts and spares through handover.

A monitor, phone image or isolated sample is not the final colour authority. State viewing distance, angle, background, illuminant/daylight conditions, wet/dry state where relevant and whether gloss or directional effect is being judged. Keep accepted samples physically protected and identified.
Build one coordinated colour and finish record
| Record field | What to lock | Who must confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Product and geometry | Exact unit/profile, drawing/revision, face/depth/section, orientation, edges/cuts/specials, mass and tolerances. | Manufacturer plus architect and structural/facade team; no dimensions or identity inferred from images. |
| Finish family | Body and surface process, project family code, colour/tonal range, gloss, texture, variation, glaze coverage and edge appearance. | Manufacturer and design team through signed master/boundary samples under stated viewing conditions. |
| Elevation distribution | Zone, grid/level, family/product, orientation, transition, quantity, batch-mixing rule and replacement reserve. | Architect/design author, supplier and installer using coordinated marked drawings and schedule. |
| Interfaces | Joint colour/depth, supports visible through openings, corners, openings, adjacent materials, sealants, flashings and cleaning compatibility. | Architect, facade/enclosure engineers, manufacturer and installer on the representative mock-up. |
| Evidence and acceptance | Exact tests/declarations required for project exposure and system, appearance method, sample hierarchy, hold points and NCR route. | Responsible engineers/specifiers and authorities where applicable; report scope must match product/configuration. |
| Handover | As-built location, product/batch, approved range, inspection/NCR record, cleaning/repair guidance, access and labelled spares. | Supplier, installer, design team, contractor and client/facilities team. |
Geometry/finish coupling: a glaze or colour approved on a flat piece is not automatically approved on a curved, ribbed, profiled, louver or special unit. Forming and firing route, body, curvature, glaze pooling/coverage, edge treatment, orientation, support and viewing geometry may change the result. Confirm every proposed pairing and its current manufacturability.
Separate appearance approval from performance evidence
Glaze, colour or gloss does not by itself prove self-cleaning, stain resistance, UV stability, fade resistance, weathering, frost/salt suitability, strength, fire behaviour, thermal/acoustic performance, low maintenance, environmental benefit or service life. Nor does “custom” mean that any colour, geometry, quantity or delivery date is feasible.
For glaze identity, crazing and sample evidence, use the Glazed Terracotta Panel Finish Guide. For angle-dependent glossy/pearlescent effects, use the Pearlescent Finish Selection Guide. Project artwork belongs in the Glazed Terracotta Artwork Coordination case; deliberate crackle and ribbed/corrugated surfaces have their own finish/system guides.
- match every report/declaration to the exact body, finish, profile, manufacturing site/revision and intended configuration;
- define project exposure, service scenario, cleaning agents, adjacent materials, acceptance method and responsible reviewer;
- coordinate structure, anchors/subframes/substrate, movement/tolerances, water/drainage, air/thermal layers, fire/cavity strategy, installation and replacement for the complete wall;
- trial cleaning and repair on representative samples/mock-up; do not publish a universal cleaner, interval or self-cleaning claim; and
- request current product- and plant-specific EPD/LCA or other environmental documentation with declared unit, boundaries, dates and assumptions before making any comparison.
Read the archive video as a sample tour, not a catalogue
Use the moving view to discuss angle, sheen, curvature and relationships among candidate colours. Do not use it as approval media: compression, display calibration, camera exposure and uncontrolled lighting prevent it from defining an acceptable production range.
Turn colour intent into a zoned sample request
Share the project location and exposure, elevations/zone map, exact panel or profile geometry, target family roles, adjacent materials, critical viewing and light conditions, quantity by zone, sample/mock-up stages, technical evidence, delivery programme and replacement strategy. Request current feasibility and a representative range rather than an unlimited colour promise.
