Clay Terracotta Brick Tile Openwork bricklaying method

An openwork brick screen should begin with an intended degree of openness, view and light—not a universal laying recipe. The five body photographs and separate featured image show the same adaptive-reuse building. Its sign reads 无界空间. The May 2022 archive describes a northern-China former business hotel converted to co-working use, at approximately 3,000 m², but it gives no city, architect, material schedule, unit, support design or LOPO role.

The reddish perforated facade is therefore used as an external visual study only. This guide explains how to define open area, sightlines and light/shadow intent, then coordinate structure, enclosure, weather, fire, guarding, falling-object risk and a full-scale mock-up for the exact project.

Specify openness as a controlled design input

Define the reference plane and calculation method before stating an open-area target. Distinguish gross screen area from clear openings after accounting for units, joints, support members, frames and edge zones. Record both the repeating module and the distribution of openings; the same overall percentage can produce very different sightlines, shadow, wind passage and structural behaviour.

Open-area schedule

Map each screen zone, reference area, clear opening geometry, depth, orientation, solid edge band, support interruption and accepted tolerance. No universal percentage is suitable for every project.

View and privacy cones

Test standing, seated, approaching, neighbouring and interior viewpoints. A pattern can appear open head-on and opaque obliquely; document intended views rather than using “transparent” as a promise.

Background enclosure

Identify whether the screen stands before glazing, an opaque wall, an open courtyard or occupied exterior space. The background controls rain, air, thermal, acoustic and security functions unless another documented assembly does.

Coordinate the module with openings, corners, heads, bases, roof/parapet zones, movement joints and transitions to solid wall. If the visual sequence depends on rotated, projecting or offset units, label every orientation and special condition in drawings; do not rely on a photograph or generic bond name.

Model light and shadow across time and viewpoints

Study the screen with project latitude, orientation, surrounding obstructions and representative dates/times. Direct sun, diffuse sky and artificial light produce different results. Review the outside appearance, light patches on internal surfaces, glare, view contrast, night-time backlighting and the effect of dust or wetness. A single sunset or night photograph cannot define annual daylight or energy performance.

Translate openwork design intentions into project evidence
IntentionDefine and modelDo not infer from the screen image
Light and shadowSun path, sky condition, orientation, depth, opening map, interior surfaces, priority dates/times and acceptable visual range.Annual daylight, glare control, cooling benefit or energy savings.
Views and privacyViewpoint cones, eye levels, distance, angle, day/night background brightness and intended visibility in both directions.Security, privacy or view protection for all users and conditions.
Wind and rainExposure, pressure, wind-driven rain, runoff, drainage, backing enclosure, openings, transitions and maintenance access.Useful ventilation, rain exclusion, watertightness or dry interiors.
Structure and retentionExact unit/element, geometry, mass, eccentricity, supports, ties/anchors/reinforcement, substrate, movements, impact and construction stages.Capacity, stability, allowed height/span or falling-object safety.
Guarding and accessEdge location, opening/climbability rules, impact, users, reach/touch zones, fall protection, inspection, cleaning and replacement.Guard, balustrade, barrier or child-safety compliance.
Fire and smokeMaterial/component classifications, assembly fire strategy, cavity/void paths, compartment edges, openings and jurisdiction requirements.Complete-wall or egress compliance from fired-clay identity alone.

Resolve support, enclosure and safety as separate scopes

First identify whether the proposal is self-supporting masonry, an anchored/supported screen, a prefabricated element or another engineered route. Then document the complete load path and the responsible designer. Gravity, wind, seismic action where applicable, impact, eccentric units, support deformation, movements, corrosion, substrate capacity, temporary states and damage scenarios require project calculations and inspections.

Openings create access and falling-object questions. Where a screen is near a walking route, entrance, terrace, occupied edge or play area, review breakage consequences, secondary retention where required, objects passing through, climbability, fall protection, impact, inspection access and safe replacement. The screen must not be called a guard or barrier unless the complete assembly is designed, verified and approved for that regulated role.

Approve a representative screen bay

Fix the identity and route

Record the exact unit or element, full/thin/block identity, dimensions, tolerances, mass, finish, joints and engineered support/enclosure route.

Issue the opening map

Dimension the reference area, clear openings, depth, orientation, edges, supports, corners, transitions and controlled variations for every zone.

Model critical conditions

Study sun/sky, viewpoints, privacy, wind/rain and background brightness at agreed locations, dates and times; state the acceptance intent.

Build a full-scale bay

Include a base, top, corner or opening, actual joints/support visibility, backing enclosure, adjacent materials and the most demanding pattern condition.

Run named project tests

Use exact configurations, methods, actions, acceptance criteria and responsible reviewers for structural, water, impact, fire or other required evidence.

Retain the control record

Keep approved samples/mock-up decisions, batch and substitution logs, concealed-work inspections, installed mapping, NCRs and replacement stock.

Before approval, confirm that the evidence package includes:

  • current product/element identity and declared manufacturing route without mapping the archive photographs to a SKU;
  • dimensioned elevations, sections and details for openings, edges, supports, movement, backing layers, drainage and fire interfaces;
  • project calculations and reports whose specimens/configurations match the intended screen and jurisdiction;
  • visual and performance mock-ups with written review positions, conditions and acceptance criteria;
  • responsibility for design, coordination, temporary stability, installation, inspections, testing and change control; and
  • safe access, cleaning, damage assessment, repair/replacement, as-builts and spare-material strategy.

Do not use a universal mortar, bond, joint, opening, reinforcement, tie, anchor, height, span, test load or construction sequence. Each depends on the chosen route, exact unit, exposure, structure, project documents and local requirements. A current Terracotta Jali Blocks product family may be a separate starting point, but it is not automatically the product or system shown in these images.
