“Terracotta tube,” “terracotta stick” and “terracotta baguette” are overlapping commercial terms, not complete technical definitions. A project must identify the exact round, square, rectangular or special fired cross-section; orientation; end condition; fixing interface; support chain and current evidence. The words “natural clay” do not prove environmental performance.

Use terminology that follows geometry
Begin with the profile drawing, not the product nickname. “Tube” may imply a continuous cavity and often suggests a round form, yet catalogue usage may also describe square or rectangular hollow extrusions. “Stick” and “baguette” generally describe a linear architectural element without defining its section.
Give the selected item a unique current manufacturer code and revision. On elevations, schedules and specifications, pair the commercial name with the exact cross-section and orientation. This prevents a verbal shortcut from becoming an accidental substitution among geometrically different products.
If several project teams use different terms, include an agreed synonym note in the component schedule while keeping one controlling code. The note aids communication but does not make profiles equivalent. All drawings, evidence and orders should still point to the same exact item.
Compare round, square and special sections
Round profiles create continuously changing highlights and do not present a single flat viewing face. Square or rectangular sections create distinct faces and stronger corner shadows. Elliptical, fluted, tapered or other special sections may add directional character and different support interfaces.
Review the chosen section from important approach angles and interior viewpoints. Rotation, background and light can change transparency and perceived depth. Confirm present manufacturing feasibility, tolerances and sample availability before the facade rhythm depends on a special geometry.
For an asymmetric section, clearly mark the intended face and orientation on current drawings, samples and packaging. A rotated piece may change both appearance and the relationship between internal webs and supports. Orientation control therefore belongs in technical as well as visual review.
Resolve open ends, closures and drainage
Show every visible and concealed end at bases, tops, corners, openings, soffits and changes in direction. Determine through the approved project design whether cavities remain open, use a system-specific closure or terminate within another detail. Consider appearance, drainage, ventilation, debris and access together.
An end cap or closure is itself a controlled component with material, geometry, attachment and exposure questions. It cannot be selected from appearance alone. Avoid creating a trapped-water condition or relying on improvised sealing; the responsible wall team must coordinate the exact profile and water-management strategy.
Include end conditions in the representative mock-up, especially where the public sees into a cavity or water can reach a transition. Record the reviewed closure, finish and attachment code. A hidden top condition and an exposed low-level end may require different project decisions.
Match fixing interfaces to the section
Internal geometry
Identify walls, webs, cavities, inserts or approved contact zones using the current section drawing.
End interface
Coordinate support, restraint and clearances with the actual end condition and orientation.
Support chain
Trace actions through connectors, rails, brackets, fasteners and anchors into the verified structure.
Tolerance chain
Review extrusion, firing, fixing, support and substrate variation across typical and special locations.
No universal load, span, spacing, support arrangement, anchor detail or installation instruction is provided. Each section, orientation, length, building zone, exposure and substrate requires project-specific engineering and current configuration-matched evidence approved by responsible qualified professionals.
Keep natural-clay claims evidence-based
Natural clay describes a material basis; it does not by itself prove recycled content, low embodied impact, responsible sourcing, recyclability, emissions, health performance or another environmental outcome. Avoid carrying the archive’s “100% green” wording into a current specification without appropriate evidence and defined scope.
If the project has sustainability objectives, request current product and manufacturing information relevant to those objectives. State the declared product, production location, reporting boundary, date and verification status. Project teams can then compare like with like rather than treating a material name as a certification.
Keep environmental review separate from engineering qualification. A product may have relevant sustainability documentation without that documentation proving structural, fire, moisture or durability performance. Each project requirement needs its own suitable current evidence and a clear responsible reviewer.
Prototype geometry, ends and system evidence
A representative mock-up should combine the exact fired section, color range, rotation, intended length, end treatment, fixing components, background and a meaningful corner or opening. Review it from planned viewpoints and assess fit, tolerance, drainage, access and replacement alongside appearance.
Map current drawings, calculations, tests or assessments to the exact configuration. The archived panel table does not qualify this tube or baguette. Record profile and hardware codes, lots, revisions, observations and accepted changes so the mock-up becomes a controlled project reference.
Control supply and future replacement
Link procurement and production records to the approved section, finish, fired range, end components and support schedule. Site quality plans should verify identity, orientation, condition and authorised release, with formal review of unexpected fit, damage or substrate conditions before concealment.
Retain installed locations, accepted deviations, inspection records, spare identities and replacement guidance. Explore the terracotta baguette range and terracotta project gallery for context, then verify the exact profile and system.
