The BASIS Wuhan campus is a two-school development in Hongshan District, Wuhan, completed in 2023 with red-toned, brick-scaled facade fields, deep arches and connected courts.
This case record preserves all 12 photographs from LOPO’s 12 June 2024 post while separating the architect’s project data from LOPO’s supplier-side material statement. It does not turn the campus story, photographs or material colour into environmental, comfort, cultural or learning-performance claims.

Project identity, team and dates
| School identity | BASIS International Schools uses “BASIS International & Bilingual Schools Wuhan” for the operating campus. The architect’s published project name is “BASIS International School Wuhan,” while the international school’s own site uses “BASIS International School Wuhan.” |
|---|---|
| Location | Hongshan District, Wuhan, Hubei, China, as identified in the ZHUBO Design–AAO project record. The checked architectural record does not require a broader “along the Yangtze” marketing description to establish the location. |
| Programme | The architect describes one campus containing international and bilingual school teaching groups, plus kindergarten, staff and student accommodation. This is a campus programme description, not a statement that every photographed building uses the same facade product. |
| Design and completion | ZHUBO Design–AAO records a project period from December 2020 to August 2023. The operator says the schools opened in fall 2023. The WordPress publication date, 12 June 2024, is not a design, construction or opening date. |
| Architecture | ZHUBO Design–AAO; project director Zhong Qiao; lead architects John Siu and Wu Yuhua. The published team also names Ma Hengsi, Peng Jingyang, Zheng Xiaoting and Li Weiqi. |
| Delivery credits | Construction drawings: WHUT Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd.; interior: Wanjian Design; landscape: TOPO Design Group; curtain wall: Zhuhai Singyes Green Building Technology; client: Ascend International Education Group. The designer-supplied English credit names Zhongnuo Construction as construction unit. |
| Area record | 78,000 m² total building area in the architect’s project record. A checked primary/operator source did not publish campus land area; no checked source published facade area. |
| LOPO role | LOPO’s 2024 supplier-side post says its terracotta tiles and breeze blocks were used. The checked architect/operator credits do not name the material supplier, and the archive provides no contract package, quantity, model, dimension or approved product schedule. Treat the role as a dated vendor claim pending purchase and submittal records. |
Campus, building, facade and supply figures are different records
Campus or site area
Not stated in the checked operator or architect source used here. Third-party enrolment pages publish land-area figures, but they are not needed for this facade case and are not carried forward.
Total building area
78,000 m², reported by the architect for the completed campus project. This is the only area figure retained and remains explicitly labelled as building area.
Facade and LOPO supply
No facade area, terracotta area, pallet quantity, unit count or split between tile and breeze block is disclosed. Photographs cannot supply those missing numbers.
For a maintenance, replacement or precedent study, the controlling records are the approved elevations and material schedule, facade subcontract, LOPO purchase order, delivery records, sample approvals and as-built handover. The 2024 post confirms only what LOPO chose to describe publicly at that date.

Material identity must come from the approved schedule
The architect’s project text calls brick the campus’s principal material. LOPO’s later page uses “terracotta tiles” and “terracotta breeze blocks.” Those terms are not interchangeable specifications: a thin or mechanically retained tile, a facing brick, an openwork block and a complete screen wall can require different dimensions, supports, joints, movement provisions, water management and safety evidence.
None of the 12 body images contains a readable product code, dimension or approved detail. Several are interiors or multi-image presentation boards. The images can support a visual account of colour, module, arches, bays and transitions, but they cannot verify that every red surface is terracotta, that a visible opening is a breeze-block unit, or that a current catalogue item matches the 2023 construction.
What makes this school case useful
This page’s specific value is not a generic list of tile benefits. It is a completed educational-campus reference in which a consistent red-toned, brick-scaled language continues across long teaching elevations, deep arched thresholds, curved courtyard edges and glazed links. The architect’s record also distinguishes the international and bilingual teaching groups, connected shared spaces, kindergarten and accommodation.
For another school, the useful design questions sit at the interfaces: how modules turn around deep arches; how red fields meet glazing, soffits, roofs and ground-level impact zones; where screen or decorative layers are accessible; and how cleaning, replacement and inspection can occur without disrupting occupied circulation. None of those decisions transfers automatically from the photographs.

Evidence to request for a comparable campus facade
- identify each visible field as brick, tile, openwork block, screen assembly, metal, render or another material;
- define exact product codes, dimensions, tolerances, colour/texture range, special arch and corner units, and approved samples;
- record substrate, support and retention, joints, movement, cavity/drainage and every glazing, soffit, roof and ground interface;
- set project-specific structural, falling-object, impact, fire, water, thermal, acoustic and durability criteria for the complete assembly;
- match reports and mock-ups to the proposed product, fixing route, exposure and jurisdiction; and
- plan batch control, installation inspection, cleaning access, replacement stock and as-built handover for an occupied school.
Use the current Terracotta Tile and Terracotta Jali Blocks pages only as starting points for a fresh selection. A current sample or profile must not be presented as the unidentified historical item without an exact record match.
Review a school facade with traceable product data
Share the project location, elevation zones, target visual references, proposed product identity and module, substrates, interfaces, quantities, exposure, performance criteria, mock-up plan, programme and required evidence. For the Wuhan archive, also provide the original approved schedule or purchase record if an exact match is required.
