This is a dated LOPO project archive, not a generic baguette performance claim.
LOPO’s 2016 article identified terracotta baguettes at the Xiamen University Shengnuo Research Institute of Nonferrous Metals. The record is useful for studying how repeated red horizontal elements and light-coloured facade materials shape a campus elevation; it does not disclose enough engineering information to reuse the system or detail.
What the 2016 record says about the institute
The source described the institute as donated by Fujian Shengnuo Group, with Xiamen University providing land for construction. It associated the research programme with advanced copper-alloy, rare-earth, aluminium-alloy and tungsten-alloy materials and their application. These organizational details are retained as part of the dated LOPO narrative rather than presented as a current institutional profile.
The article attributed the main-building design to Li Lixin of the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Xiamen University and recorded a construction area of about 13,154 m². It did not provide a project completion year, baguette quantity, architect-of-record confirmation, contractor, facade engineer, installer, system supplier scope, testing record or certification package.
Facade composition visible in the archive
The 2016 text described a facade combining light-coloured stone with brick-red terracotta baguettes. The surviving body photograph shows repeated red horizontal elements set across and beside window openings, framed by pale vertical and horizontal facade bands. The colour contrast and repetition create a consistent visual rhythm across different bay widths.

The photograph can support an appearance discussion, but it cannot establish the exact baguette orientation in section, span, spacing, wall build-up, fixing, end restraint, substrate, stone-cladding system, drainage, glass specification or maintenance access. No structural, shading, ventilation, thermal, fire or impact result can be derived from it.
Historical product record
The project entry named terracotta baguette item T408569 with a nominal 40 × 85 mm section. It did not state unit length, colour code, surface, orientation, spacing, support type, fixing centres, production quantity or replacement stock. The dimensions and code remain readable here for archive continuity, not current procurement.
A separate closing paragraph in the 2016 article described possible LOPO baguette surfaces including natural, grooved, strip-line and wood-texture options, plus glazed matte or semi-gloss finishes. It did not identify which, if any, was used on this building. Do not infer from the photograph that the red units are glazed or assign a historic generic finish list to the project. Check today’s range, manufacturing limits and samples on the current product page.
Turn the visual reference into a current project brief
Geometry and rhythm
Define section, length, orientation, spacing, span, end conditions, intermediate supports, corners and changes at different window bays. Coordinate the module with glazing, mullions, stone joints, floor lines and facade tolerances.
Colour and surface
Approve physical colour and surface range samples under relevant light. Establish blending, orientation, acceptable variation, batch control and replacement material rather than selecting from this compressed archive image.
Function
State whether the elements are visual screens, solar-control devices, guards, privacy elements or another defined component. Each intended function needs its own geometry, analysis, evidence and interface requirements.
Responsibilities
Assign design and approval for baguettes, internal reinforcement where applicable, end caps, pins, brackets, rails, fasteners, substrate, adjacent cladding, windows, water control, fire interfaces and access.
- building location, height, orientation, terrain and exposure zones;
- wind, impact, seismic, movement, vibration and other project design actions;
- baguette section, length, weight, span, support positions, orientation and allowable tolerances;
- support and fixing materials, corrosion environment, edge distances, substrate and load path;
- window operation, ventilation openings, views, cleaning access and replacement route;
- fire and smoke strategy, cavity or opening interfaces and applicable regulatory requirements; and
- current product data, calculations, tests, samples, mock-up scope and approval parties.
Separate visual screening from solar and ventilation performance
The old article called the product a “sunscreen baguette,” but it gave no orientation, spacing, solar study, glazing data or measured result for this project. For a new facade, use project-specific solar and daylight analysis to select geometry. Check seasonal sun, glare, views, interior loads and interaction with glass or other shading devices; do not assume that repeated terracotta elements deliver a particular reduction.
Likewise, open horizontal elements are not automatically mechanical ventilation louvers. Where a plant or occupied-space opening sits behind them, the responsible designers must establish required free area, pressure loss, rain management, screens, acoustic treatment, fire/smoke provisions and maintenance access for the complete opening.
Coordinate structure, interfaces and access
Qualified project parties must verify the element and every connection for the actual actions, substrate and governing requirements. Where units are near occupied areas, openings or access routes, review impact, breakage, retention and falling-object risks as part of the project design. This archive supplies no fixing detail or safety approval.
Use samples and a representative mock-up
Start with current physical samples, then build a mock-up that includes the selected section and length, support/fixing concept, representative span and spacing, end condition, window or opening, adjacent stone or cladding, sealant/flashing interface and access method. Review it from the principal exterior and interior viewpoints.
Agree appearance criteria, allowable colour/surface range, alignment and tolerance, test or opening-up scope, repair rules and approval responsibility before production. An appearance mock-up does not replace engineering, fire/water coordination or the evidence required by the project and authority.
Review current resources
Use this archive to understand one historical composition, then review current Terracotta Baguette and Louver information. Compare other documented applications in the Gallery and contact LOPO with the project brief rather than ordering from the 2016 item record alone.
Prepare the baguette project package
Send the project location and height, elevations and opening details, intended baguette function, section/orientation/spacing concept, substrate and adjacent systems, exposure and actions, colour/finish intent, performance criteria, standards, mock-up/testing plan, quantity and programme. Final system design, engineering, installation and compliance remain project-specific.
