Grooved terracotta panels change more than facade texture. Groove depth, pitch, crest shape and orientation affect shadow, apparent colour, water tracks, dirt retention, edge cuts, joint alignment and the feasible extrusion. A successful specification coordinates the visible profile with the panel body, support system and maintenance strategy before the elevation is released.

Define the groove as measurable geometry

A description such as “linear” or “ribbed” leaves too much open. Schedule the groove direction, pitch, depth, valley width, crest width or radius, surface finish and any intentional irregularity. Identify the panel face, nominal module, actual joint, end condition and the location where the pattern starts relative to each edge.

Ask whether the profile is an existing extrusion, a modification or a new die. Deep, narrow or undercut features may be difficult to extrude, dry and fire consistently. The manufacturer should review minimum wall sections, hollow-chamber arrangement, likely distortion, cutting limits and practical lengths. Agree tolerances for both overall panel and groove registration.

Review the design under morning, midday, evening and overcast light. A groove can make one fired colour appear as several tones, and distant views may merge fine ribs into a flat value. Full-size elevation studies should include realistic joints, corners and adjacent glass or metal.

Direct water without promising a self-cleaning face

Terracotta rainscreen joints intentionally admit some water, so the backing wall, cavity and flashings remain the primary drainage strategy. At the face, groove orientation changes runoff. Vertical valleys may guide streaks; horizontal relief can create repeated drip lines or hold deposits; diagonal profiles may concentrate water at one edge. Detail where each path ends.

Study parapets, copings, sills, projecting signs and facade steps that discharge water onto the grooves. Keep runoff from staining entrances or adjacent pale materials. At the base, consider splashback and de-icing salts. Do not label a textured surface “self-cleaning” without a defined test and exposure; local pollution, shade, biology and maintenance access can dominate actual appearance.

Approve colour, soiling and cleaning on real samples

Use a range of production-representative panels, not one small chip. Review crest and valley colour, gloss, glaze pooling where applicable, firing variation and the visibility of minor chips. Build the mock-up at the intended orientation and height, then inspect from close public routes and normal distant views.

Before adopting a cleaner, identify the deposit and confirm whether the surface is natural, glazed or treated. Trial the mildest compatible method in an inconspicuous area, document concentration, dwell time, tools, rinsing and runoff, and compare the dry result. Abrasive methods can flatten crests or change reflectance even when they do not visibly crack the clay.

Coordinate grooves with panel body and fixing

Section and span

Confirm that the visible relief, hollow chambers and back geometry provide a tested or engineered load path at the proposed span and orientation.

Clips and rails

Keep engagement locations, retainers and fasteners compatible with the panel section; do not let decorative alignment conceal inadequate support.

Movement

Provide joint and perimeter clearances for terracotta, subframe and building movement without pinching crests or exposing inconsistent gaps.

Replacement

Check how one coded panel can be removed, oriented and reinstalled while preserving groove registration and colour blending.

Rotating a panel may alter support locations, chamber direction and cutting behaviour even if the face pattern looks interchangeable. Obtain written confirmation for every orientation. Project calculations and reports must match the actual profile, span, fixings, wind zone and substrate.

Resolve edges, openings and changes in direction

Show whether grooves stop short, run into a cut, wrap a special shape or meet a metal trim at corners, jambs, heads, sills and parapets. Avoid narrow, fragile crests at cut edges. Coordinate sealants and closures without filling intended open joints or blocking drainage behind the panels.

Set a registration rule across joints and define where accumulated dimensional tolerance is absorbed. Number handed pieces and exceptional cuts on shop drawings. A small full-scale corner or window mock-up often reveals awkward groove endings that a flat elevation hides.

These are historical entries only. Require current, traceable documents for the exact grooved panel, finish, factory, support condition and order before using any value.
