LOPO Grey Terracotta Panel Cladding Project--The Citizen Fitness Center

This case archive documents grey terracotta cladding and a vertical metal screen at Shenyang National Fitness Center.

The four photographs came from LOPO’s March 2018 article. The replacement keeps the dated project and area records visible while correcting the facility identity and separating observed facade composition from unverified construction, performance and contract claims.

Evidence boundary: the source used the generic English name “The Citizen Fitness Center” and an unclear “Nanshan Road” address. Current Shenyang Sports Bureau material identifies the operating facility as 沈阳市全民健身中心, while a 2012 project report places it at No. 61 South Sanma Road in Heping District. This page uses “Shenyang National Fitness Center” as a practical translation, not as evidence of an officially adopted English name.

Facility identity and date boundary

The Shenyang Sports Bureau lists 沈阳市全民健身中心 among the city’s public sports venues. That identity is more specific than the old page’s generic “Citizen Fitness Center.” A 2012 Shenyang project report records a 35,000 m² fitness building at No. 61 South Sanma Road, Heping District, closely matching the old page’s area and programme.

The 2018 LOPO archive says the center was “officially complete in 2017.” However, a Shenyang Daily report dated 28 December 2017 described 26 December as the center’s third anniversary of formal public opening, pointing to 26 December 2014. The replacement does not convert the 2018 publication date into a completion year and does not present the disputed 2017 statement as settled construction history.

Grey panel fields behind a vertical screen

The building is composed as a low rectangular volume. Dark grey rectangular panels form broad opaque fields, interrupted by narrow vertical windows. In front of the glazed perimeter, closely spaced light-coloured metal elements rise from lower levels beyond the roof line, producing a second visual layer.

The old article calls the screen members small rectangular aluminium-alloy tubes and says they are held away from the terracotta-clad wall. That material description is retained as a dated source record. Their section, alloy, finish, spacing, attachment, loads and maintenance access are not documented and cannot be measured reliably from these compressed images.

Entrances, stairs and facade transitions

The archive describes access from all four sides and prominent entrances at the east and west. The photographs support raised entrance zones with long external stairs, but they do not establish every accessible route, direction or entrance designation. Current plans and accessibility information must control any operational description.

The site area, construction area and investment are retained because they are useful historical fields, but their differences show why a current project profile should be checked against owner-issued documents. They are not cladding quantities or facade areas.

Product record and missing specification data

The only product description in the source is grey terracotta panel cladding. No item number, body, surface, panel module, thickness, joint, installed area, quantity, batch, support system, test result or standard is supplied. The visual grid must not be reverse-engineered into a procurement schedule.

Terracotta selection

Confirm current item, body, colour and surface range, dimensions, tolerances, intended orientation, corner pieces and replacement strategy from current samples and technical documents.

Metal screen

Define member geometry, alloy/finish, spacing, brackets, loads, movement, drainage, cleaning, replacement and lightning or electrical coordination where applicable.

Layered facade

Coordinate sightlines, access and tolerances between the outer metal elements, glazing, grey panel field, openings, stairs, roof edge and base.

Public-building use

Review impact, crowd and maintenance conditions, accessibility, falling-object risk and safe access through the responsible project and venue teams.

System and performance remain project-specific

The photographs do not reveal the full wall build-up, panel attachment, cavity, insulation, membranes, fire barriers, flashings, anchors or structure supporting the vertical screen. They cannot prove structural capacity, fire behaviour, water management, freeze-thaw resistance, corrosion resistance, durability, thermal or acoustic performance.

Confirm for any current sports or civic facade

  • building geometry, survey, substrates, complete enclosure and responsible design parties;
  • panel and screen loads, supports, anchors, movement, tolerances, joints and replacement access;
  • drainage, ventilation where applicable, waterproofing, openings, base, parapet and roof transitions;
  • project-specific fire, structural, weather, thermal, acoustic, impact and corrosion requirements;
  • applicable regulations, authority approvals, calculations, test evidence and inspection plan; and
  • representative samples/mock-up, acceptance criteria, maintenance method and handover records.

The source does not define LOPO as architect, engineer, contractor, installer or exclusive material supplier. It associates grey terracotta panels with the photographed project, but no contract scope is inferred.
