Clay brick pavers bring fired colour, a familiar modular scale and many possible laying patterns to paths, courtyards, plazas and selected traffic areas. A successful pavement is not defined by the paver alone: unit thickness and strength, anticipated loads, base construction, edge restraint, drainage, joints and workmanship must operate together. The appropriate product should therefore be selected from current technical data for the real application.

What the archived LOPO page claimed

The 2016 article stated that LOPO had more than 20 years of experience manufacturing clay products at that time. It described its brick pavers as hard, durable, colourfast, low in absorption, high in strength, freeze–thaw resistant, easy to install and low in maintenance. It also promoted use on sidewalks, driveways and city streets.

Those descriptions express the intended product direction, but they are not a specification for every current paver. Strength, absorption, abrasion resistance, slip behaviour and freeze–thaw suitability depend on the exact reference, test method and exposure. Request current reports and identify the project standard before relying on any performance phrase.

Historical boundary: the “more than 20 years” statement belongs to the 2016 archive. Product availability, technical values, minimum order, price and manufacturing experience should be stated from current company documents when used in a live tender.

Match the paver to the intended load

Pedestrian paths

Walking routes need an even surface, appropriate slip resistance, controlled lipping and joints that do not create trip hazards or impede accessibility.

Courtyards and plazas

Large fields require drainage falls, movement planning, edge restraint and a pattern that coordinates with entrances, trees, channels and street furniture.

Driveways

Occasional vehicles change the required paver thickness, laying pattern, base, bedding and edge design. Turning and braking zones deserve particular review.

Streets and service areas

Public-road or heavy-service use requires engineering for axle loads, repetitions, subgrade, traffic speed and local authority standards. Not every clay paver is suitable.

The old page said architects, builders and contractors could use the pavers with confidence in all these settings. A more reliable approach is to classify the traffic and obtain confirmation for the chosen unit and pavement build-up. The manufacturer’s role, engineer’s design and installer’s method should be clearly separated.

Build the pavement from the ground up

Begin with the subgrade. Weak or variable ground may need improvement, separation or additional base depth. The base should be compacted in controlled layers and shaped to the required falls. Bedding material and thickness depend on whether the pavement is flexible, rigid or another engineered system; one detail should not be copied across all sites.

Edge restraints keep the field from spreading under use. Joints should be consistent and filled with material compatible with the selected system. Drainage must direct water away from buildings and avoid persistent ponding. In cold climates, the design should consider saturation and freeze–thaw exposure across the paver, joints, bedding and base—not only a laboratory value for the unit.

Use colour range and laying pattern deliberately

The archive correctly noted that clay colour ranges are inherent in the product and should be sampled. Firing can produce natural tonal movement, which may make the pavement richer but can look patchy if packs are installed one at a time. Approve several representative units and blend from multiple pallets across the active work area.

Custom colours and sizes were offered in the old listing subject to a minimum order. Current feasibility depends on clay body, tooling, firing, quantity and programme. Custom dimensions should be coordinated with pattern, packaging and replacement stock before production.

Installation, cleaning and maintenance

Set out a sample area before full installation. It should demonstrate the paver, colour blend, bond, joint, edge, cuts and cleaning method. Check levels with real site falls and adjoining thresholds. For rigid or mortar-set paving, coordinate movement joints and curing; for flexible paving, control bedding uniformity, joint filling and final compaction.

Clay pavers are often described as low-maintenance, but all pavements need inspection. Remove debris from drains, address rocking units or lost joint material and use cleaning products compatible with the paver and joint system. Test stain removal in a discreet area. Sealers should not be assumed necessary or suitable without product-specific advice.

The archive also claimed that clay benefits always exceed concrete costs and suggested economical homeowner installation. Cost and constructability vary with local labour, base design, freight, cutting, maintenance and service life. Compare equivalent engineered systems across the same period rather than relying on a universal material ranking.

A project-ready selection checklist

  1. Define location, climate, traffic type, design loads and required local standard.
  2. Confirm paver size, thickness, strength, absorption, abrasion and slip data.
  3. Engineer the subgrade, base, bedding, joints, drainage and edge restraints.
  4. Approve a representative colour range and full paving sample area.
  5. Confirm quantities, cuts, waste, spare stock, packing and delivery sequence.
