Clay brick tile installation is a coordinated wall-system task, not a universal six-step recipe.
This guide preserves the original 2017 sequence—prepare and set out, plan cuts, begin the field, continue courses, finish joints, then clean—but places every material, dimension, timing and detail under the actual project specification, selected system supplier and local requirements.
Choose the wall system before choosing the installation sequence
Confirm whether the selected clay brick tile is part of an adhered facing, a mechanically retained system, a prefabricated or panelized assembly, or another approved construction. Interior and exterior locations, wall height, exposure, substrate, tile size and mass, fire strategy, water-control approach, movement and local rules can change the acceptable solution.
System information
Identify the tile, substrate, preparation products, adhesive or mortar where applicable, jointing material, sealants, trims, flashings, membranes, reinforcement, primers and mechanical components as one compatible specified assembly.
Design responsibility
Record who designs and approves the substrate, water and air control, drainage, movement joints, bonded or mechanical attachment, fire interfaces, edge restraint, tests, mock-up and installation release.
A tile photograph or historical method does not establish suitability. Obtain current product data, substrate requirements, compatibility statements, drawings, calculations or tests and jurisdictional approvals required for the actual assembly.
Release the substrate and environmental conditions
The original article began by cleaning the wall and marking level lines. Keep those principles, but inspect the substrate before work starts. Confirm its identity, age or cure state, condition, stability, plane, strength, moisture, contamination, coatings, cracks, joints and compatibility using the approved project method and acceptance criteria.
- approved backing wall or carrier and its completed inspections;
- surface condition, laitance, dust, release agents, paint, oil and other bond-inhibiting material;
- flatness, level/plumb, local repairs and dimensional tolerances;
- existing cracks, construction joints and structural movement locations;
- moisture condition and any specified preparation, primer or pre-wetting procedure;
- membranes, flashings, drainage, cavity components and penetrations completed in the correct sequence; and
- air/substrate/material temperatures, rain, wind, direct sun, condensation and forecast conditions within the approved product limits.
The 2017 text told installers to wet a wall and wait a stated number of hours. That is not carried forward as a general rule. Some systems require a defined moisture condition; others restrict wet substrates. Follow the selected preparation and bonding-product instructions together with the project specification.

Build and approve a representative mock-up
Use the project mock-up to resolve matters that drawings and product sheets cannot show alone. Include the actual substrate preparation, selected tile range, bond or mechanical method, joint materials, colour blending, cuts, corners, openings, sealant interfaces, flashings, movement and cleaning method that will be used in the work.
Agree the review distance and lighting, acceptance criteria, testing or opening-up requirements, repair limits and who may approve the mock-up. Retain it as a comparison standard and record any changes before production installation.
Set out courses, colours, cuts and joints
Establish datums and control lines from the approved elevations. Coordinate full units, cut units, bond pattern, course heights, corners, openings, returns, bases, tops, soffits and transitions before installing the field. Check actual delivered tile dimensions and variation so cumulative layout does not force narrow or unapproved cuts.
Colour and texture blending
Compare deliveries with the approved physical range. Draw pieces from the identified packages or batches according to the approved blending plan, and keep orientation or face selection consistent where the finish requires it.
Joint planning
Define joint width, depth, backing, profile, colour and material from the project documents. Keep movement and sealant joints distinct from ordinary pointed or grouted joints and carry them through at their designed locations.
Cut planning
Schedule cuts at corners, openings and interfaces before bonding begins. Confirm minimum acceptable unit size, exposed-edge treatment, return pieces and whether cut faces require a special detail or replacement unit.
Work sequence
The old guide worked from a lower corner in alternating full and half pieces. Use that only if it matches the approved bond, supports and construction sequence; another pattern or starting point may be required.
The former joint-width examples are intentionally omitted. Spacing must follow the actual tile, appearance, tolerance, movement, joint material, workmanship and code requirements.
Cut safely and verify every interface piece
Use the approved cutting equipment, blade, support and dust-control method for the selected clay product. Follow site safety requirements for silica or other dust, noise, eye/hand protection, water/electrical control, access and waste. Do not improvise unsafe cutting at the scaffold or wall.
Check each cut for dimensions, squareness, chips, cracks, exposed body and fit before installation. Dry-check corners, returns, sill/head pieces, service penetrations, adjacent materials and repeated special pieces. Reject or rework only through the project’s defined criteria.
Apply the approved bond and any required mechanical restraint
The second archive illustration shows a cementitious-looking material spread on the rear of a thin brick tile. It does not identify the product, mix, thickness, coverage, substrate or exposure and must not be used to select a bonding method.

- verify product identity, shelf life, storage and batch records;
- prepare and mix only as specified by the material manufacturer, using the required water or additive and equipment;
- observe approved pot life, open time and environmental limits without relying on the old article’s timing;
- apply the specified method and check contact/coverage using the project’s inspection plan;
- avoid unsupported voids, skinning, contamination or retempering unless the current instructions expressly permit the condition;
- install mechanical clips, rails, ties, anchors or other restraint only where designed, using approved components, spacing, embedment, edge distances and substrate; and
- record hold points, tests and concealed-work inspections before covering them.
Adhesive bonding and mechanical restraint are not interchangeable. Where both are required, coordinate their order and tolerances. Qualified parties must verify gravity, wind, impact, seismic or other actions and the selected attachment strategy for the project.
Set tiles without losing layout or movement
Place pieces to the approved lines, pattern and joint controls while the selected bonding material is within its stated working condition. Check alignment, plane, face cleanliness, edge condition and bond as work proceeds. Do not use the old fixed adjustment-time statement; actual adjustability depends on the approved product and site conditions.

Protect designed movement joints from adhesive, mortar or grout bridges. Maintain the approved relationship to structural joints, changes in substrate, corners, openings, floor lines and adjacent systems. Stop work when tolerances, bond condition, weather or concealed components fall outside the approved plan.
Coordinate water control, drainage and terminations
Clay brick tiles and their visible joints are not a substitute for the project’s water-control design. Coordinate membranes, flashings, weeps or drainage paths, cavity or bonded-system requirements, penetrations and transitions so water is directed to the intended outlet without obstructing drying or inspection.
No diagram on this page is a universal waterproofing or drainage detail. Use coordinated project drawings and approved components for the actual wall.
Finish joints only after the system allows it
The old article prescribed one cement-based joint material and fixed waiting periods. Those directions are removed. Confirm the approved jointing or pointing product, compatibility, colour, mixing, application, joint preparation, depth/profile, environmental limits, cure state and protection with the system and material suppliers.
Keep movement joints free for their specified backing and sealant system. At corners and interfaces, follow the approved detail rather than filling every visible gap with the field-joint material.

Clean, protect and hand over the wall
Remove fresh residue only by the approved method without smearing joints or damaging the tile finish. Test cleaners, tools, water pressure and sequence on the mock-up or an agreed inconspicuous area. Do not assume that top-to-bottom washing, acids, abrasive tools, pressure washing or early saturation is acceptable for every tile and joint system.
Protect completed work from impact, contamination, rain, heat, freezing, rapid drying and adjacent trades as required by the selected materials and site plan. Do not load, wash, seal or release the wall until the specified cure and inspection conditions have been met.
- approved substrate and environmental-condition releases;
- tile, adhesive/mortar, joint, sealant and mechanical-component batch records;
- layout, colour blending, cuts, corners and interface inspections;
- bond/contact checks, pull tests or opening-up inspections only where the approved plan requires them;
- movement, flashing, drainage, waterproofing and concealed-component sign-offs;
- cleaning trial, repairs, nonconformance closure and final appearance approval; and
- as-built details, spare-material identification, cleaning guidance, inspection intervals and replacement procedure.
Plan maintenance around safe access, periodic observation of tiles, joints, sealants, flashings and drainage outlets, compatible cleaning and traceable replacement material. The owner and project team should define triggers and responsibilities for investigation or repair.
Use current product and project documents
Review current Ceramic Brick Slips and Terracotta Tile information, then send the substrate, exposure, tile, wall build-up and governing project documents for coordination.
Prepare the installation coordination package
Send the project location and exposure, substrate, wall build-up, selected tile, elevations, interfaces, performance requirements, applicable standards, mock-up/testing plan, quantity and programme. Final system design, materials, details, workmanship criteria, installation and compliance remain project-specific.
