A hollow terracotta baguette must be specified by its exact fired cross-section, orientation and support interfaces. The word “hollow” does not prove low weight, strength, thermal insulation or acoustic performance. Extrusion and firing tolerances, end conditions, fixings and the complete project load path require current, configuration-matched evidence.

Archive boundary: this 2013 record described a Hollow Structure Terracotta Wall Clay Baguette, type “Terracotta Baguette Stick,” natural clay, an archived 100×100×82mm size, several colors, broad applications, CE and ISO9001:2008. Its “100% green” wording and unrelated terracotta-panel technical table are historical only. None establishes current dimensions, environmental performance or system suitability.

Specify the full hollow cross-section

Use a current manufacturer drawing and unique profile code. Record the outer shape, wall and web geometry, cavities, radii, engagement or insert zones, orientation, finish, length range and dimensional tolerances. An overall size does not reveal where material is present or how a fixing interacts with the extrusion.

Keep the design model, sample, quotation, calculations, mock-up and delivery schedule on the same revision. If an archived profile has been replaced, assess the successor independently. Small internal or external geometry changes can alter interfaces and invalidate assumptions carried from an earlier item.

A labeled cut section can help designers and installers understand internal geometry that remains invisible in elevation. Keep it connected to the approved drawing and fired sample; a cut piece is a communication reference, not a substitute for manufacturing records or engineering evidence.

Account for extrusion and firing variation

Extrusion and firing are part of the product definition, so the current manufacturer should state the controlled tolerances and inspection approach for the exact profile. Review straightness, twist, bow, cross-sectional variation, ends and intended fixing zones in relation to the support system and facade alignment.

Evaluate variation as a chain that also includes brackets, rails, fasteners and the building substrate. Site adjustment cannot be assumed to absorb every departure. The responsible team should define how survey information, product checks and technical queries are coordinated before affected work is released.

Sampling should represent relevant production lots and actual lengths, not only short showroom pieces. Record dimensional findings against the current acceptance plan and watch for repeated trends. A recurring deviation may require broader containment and technical review before material reaches the facade.

Define orientation and end conditions

Show whether each baguette is horizontal, vertical, inclined or rotated, and identify the intended top, bottom and viewing faces where geometry is not symmetrical. Orientation can change exposure, drainage, shadow, fixing access and the relationship between internal webs and end supports.

Coordinate cut or factory-finished ends, visible cavities, end closures where part of the approved system, drainage paths and transitions at parapets, bases, corners and openings. End treatment must be compatible with the exact profile and support design rather than improvised from a catalogue photograph.

Prepare condition schedules where a typical element changes at edges or openings. The schedule should cross-reference profile, orientation, end component, fixing and detail revision. This prevents a visually similar special condition from inheriting an inappropriate typical support assumption.

Trace support and the complete load path

Baguette interface

Identify exact support or restraint contact with the profile, internal webs, inserts or approved fixing zones.

End support

Show how end components, intermediate components where engineered, and clearances relate to the controlled section.

Support chain

Trace actions through fixing, rail, bracket, fasteners and anchors into the verified structure.

Project evidence

Map drawings, calculations, tests or assessments to the exact orientation, length, interfaces and exposure.

No universal load, span, spacing, support arrangement, anchor detail or installation instruction is supplied here. Those decisions depend on the current profile, project actions, geometry, exposure, substrate, jurisdiction and complete system evidence under responsible qualified engineering.

Do not infer performance from hollow geometry

A cavity can reduce or redistribute material relative to another section, but “hollow” alone does not establish unit mass, structural strength or failure behavior. Obtain current product data and configuration-specific engineering evidence rather than treating the archive title as a performance statement.

Likewise, cavity shape does not prove thermal or acoustic performance for a facade. Whole-assembly outcomes depend on many layers, interfaces and test conditions. The archived panel values for strength, frost, wind, fire, sound, heat, water and other properties do not qualify this baguette.

The archive’s natural-clay and “green” wording is also not a current environmental declaration. Where sustainability criteria matter, request product-specific information with a clear scope, production location, reporting period and verification status, then let the project team assess relevance.

Prototype the actual span and interfaces

A project-specific technical and visual mock-up can help review representative length, orientation, profile variation, end supports, intermediate interfaces where applicable, movement, alignment, access, drainage and replacement. Define scope and acceptance criteria before it is assembled.

Record product codes, batches, drawing revisions and evidence represented. A successful mock-up supports only its approved configuration. Any change in profile, length, orientation, fixing, rail, fastener, bracket, anchor, finish or substrate belongs in formal change control and renewed review.

Preserve identity through handover

Production and delivery records should connect lots to approved profile drawings, samples, material records and dimensional checks. Site quality plans should verify orientation, component identity, condition and authorised release, with project-defined reviews for first-of-type and concealed interfaces.

Retain installed locations, accepted deviations, inspections and replacement information. Explore the terracotta baguette range and terracotta project gallery for early context, then verify current profile and system evidence.
