Establish provenance before calling it a case study
Separate what the source actually states from later assumptions. Record the page title, date, image and archived product table, then mark location, architect, completion date, client, wall system and supplier as unknown unless independent authoritative records confirm them. Do not let a familiar place name turn an image into an attributed project.
If project facts are needed, establish an evidence trail and cite the source appropriate to each claim. Until then, describe visible relationships rather than hidden intent: module, spacing, depth, shadow, repetition and contrast. This keeps design learning useful without inventing history.
Keep captions and presentation boards equally disciplined. Phrases such as “inspired by the archive image” or “formal study” communicate the source honestly. Remove project credits, geographic statements and supply claims that cannot be supported, even when they seem plausible.
Read form and rhythm without inventing performance
Use the archive image to ask how horizontal and vertical lines, projecting units, gaps and tonal shifts influence scale. Note which observations depend on viewpoint or lighting. A flat photograph cannot reveal concealed supports, section depth, drainage, wall layers or actual dimensions.
Translate observations into neutral diagrams rather than copying an unverified facade. Compare dense and open arrangements, consistent and varied projection, aligned and offset courses. State the desired visual effect in the new project’s own brief.
Test the composition against the new building’s openings, floor lines, corners and public viewpoints. A rhythm that reads clearly in a cropped archive image may become repetitive, visually noisy or impossible to terminate across a full elevation.
Verify the current brick and its wall role
Request current codes and drawings showing length, height, depth, voids where any, edge geometry, tolerances, mass and attachment features. Confirm whether the archive 220 × 105 × 52 mm unit exists, has changed or was only one member of a family. Tie samples, quotation and evidence to the current revision.
Define whether the unit is a facing, mechanically supported element, screen component or another engineered product. It is not automatically loadbearing, waterproof or suitable for projection. The responsible team should define support, restraint and safety for the complete wall.
Translate the composition into buildable rules
Module
Set actual unit and joint dimensions, datums, repeats, cut rules and alignment with openings.
Depth
Draw every projection, support, clearance and edge condition rather than indicating shadow graphically.
Variation
Define where colour, texture, rotation or depth may vary and where consistency is required.
Interfaces
Resolve corners, bases, parapets, windows, doors, penetrations and adjacent claddings in section.
Test the rules across complete elevations. A repeat that works in an open field may create weak slivers or unresolved supports at boundaries. Schedule special units and permitted substitutions before quantities are released.
Design for exposure, water and movement
Map rain, runoff, drainage and drying through the actual wall construction. Identify the water-control layer, cavity or bedding route, joints, flashings, weeps where applicable and terminations. Projecting or recessed geometry can redirect water, but its behaviour must be designed rather than inferred from appearance.
Coordinate structural movement, thermal change, support deflection and material interfaces. Avoid trapping water or bridging movement joints with a decorative pattern. Current evidence for absorption, freeze–thaw, attachment, wind, impact or fire must match the exact product and system where those criteria apply.
Use mock-ups to study shadow and construction
Build a representative mock-up with current units, intended supports, joints, colour range, depth changes, corner, opening and drainage detail. Review it at expected viewing distances in useful lighting and after wetting where relevant. Record observations without claiming the mock-up duplicates the archive subject.
Use the technical review to confirm access, tolerances, attachment, sequencing, cleaning and replacement. Retain labelled samples and approved rule drawings. A visual mock-up cannot replace required testing or engineering, but it can reveal conflicts before repetition.
Photograph the approved mock-up under stated conditions and record every deliberate variation. If later value engineering simplifies depth or changes the unit, compare the revised panel against the approved design rules rather than judging an isolated replacement sample.
Release a traceable new design
Issue the project’s own product codes, drawings, composition rules, wall sections, evidence, samples, quantities, specials, quality plan, spares and programme. Label the archive image as inspiration only. Require review for changes to geometry, body, finish, support or evidence scope.
