Terracotta baguette support concepts begin with the load path
A baguette screen is not defined by one bolt or bracket. Orientation, span, exposure, support structure, movement, replacement access and the consequences of failure must be coordinated around the selected terracotta section and the project structure.
Four decisions that shape the fixing concept
Geometry
Define vertical, horizontal or angled orientation; section, length, projection, spacing, rotation and joint rhythm. Confirm the current manufacturable range rather than assuming that a historical item remains available.
Support
Decide where each unit is restrained and where movement is allowed. End-only, intermediate or continuous support concepts create different stresses, tolerances and replacement sequences.
Exposure
Establish wind pressure and suction, seismic demand, self-weight, impact, vibration, snow or ice where relevant, access loads and exposure to moisture, salts or pollutants.
Consequence
Classify overhead pieces, entrances, public edges and areas near occupants. A screen beside a fall edge is not automatically a guard, handrail, balustrade or fall-arrest component.
Engineering coordination workflow
Freeze the design intent
Record the visual module, sightlines, orientation, corners, terminations and replacement strategy. Identify the exact current baguette code, cross-section, finish, proposed length and permitted production tolerances on the product schedule.
Define actions and combinations
The project engineer sets design loads and combinations under the governing code. Include both inward and outward actions and any safety-critical use; do not select a connection from unit weight alone.
Trace the complete load path
Follow force from the terracotta unit through its inserts, pins, plates or brackets into rails, L-angles, steel tubes or other secondary supports, then through anchors into the verified primary structure. Assign design responsibility at every interface.
Coordinate movement and compatibility
Allow for dimensional tolerance, building drift, support deflection, installation variation and differential thermal or moisture movement without unintended ceramic bearing. Specify compatible metals, isolation, coatings, fasteners and sealants for the actual exposure.
Validate the assembled configuration
Use project-specific calculations and any required component, connection or assembly testing. A representative mock-up should resolve tolerances, appearance, water paths, noise/rattle risk, installation access and removal of a single damaged piece.
Control fabrication and installation
Approve coordinated shop drawings before manufacture. Survey the substrate, verify anchors and setting out, inspect delivered units and install only to the approved sequence with defined torque/control procedures, hold points and records.
2014 Beijing project image: a dated product record
The original image labels this as “A Project in Beijing,” dated 2014. It records “terracotta louver,” item No. T50150636, size 50 × 150 × 1200 mm. Those fields describe the pictured historical example only; they do not confirm present availability, allowable span, support spacing, load capacity or suitability for another facade.
The montage shows vertically oriented red baguettes wrapping glazed building volumes. It can inform early discussion of rhythm, corners and transitions, but the photograph does not expose the complete support or anchor system.

What the historical fixing sketch actually shows
The second image is an exploded and sectional concept rather than a dimensioned project shop drawing. Its visible labels are preserved below so the archive remains searchable, while their design status is made explicit.

The installation concept recorded in the 2017 text
The old article described setting out from construction drawings with a level or laser, aligning a fixing frame, supporting the ends, fastening the baguettes with screws, checking level for horizontal units, proceeding from bottom to top and cleaning after installation. These are retained as an archive summary—not a method statement. Orientation, number and location of supports, installation direction, temporary restraint, fastener procedure and cleaning method must be reissued for the approved current system and site conditions.
The article also said that color, length and cross-section difficulty affect production and price. Treat that as a historical commercial observation only: current feasibility, minimum quantities, lead time and quotation require a current sample, schedule and supplier confirmation.
Do not turn a concept image into a site detail
- Do not scale a hole, gap, plate, support spacing or baguette length from either JPEG.
- Do not adopt M6 or M8 simply because those labels appear in the archive; diameter alone does not define fastener capacity or durability.
- Do not drill, notch or enlarge a terracotta unit on site unless the current manufacturer’s approved procedure and project engineer specifically permit it.
- Do not assume an L-angle, steel tube/pipe, bracket or anchor is adequate without the verified substrate, load path, connection design and corrosion strategy.
- Do not use a decorative louver screen as guarding, fall protection or a climb-resistant barrier unless the complete assembly is designed, tested and approved for that regulated function.
Coordinate the current product and project conditions
For a fixing review, provide the baguette code or proposed section, orientation, lengths, spacing, elevations, support/substrate information, project location, governing standard, design loads and intended safety function.
