“Fireproof decorative wall cladding brick” is not a usable fire specification. A material reaction-to-fire result, a component classification and the fire performance of a complete wall are different matters. The project must define the required outcome and verify every relevant layer, fixing and interface.

Archive boundary: this 2013 record described a 60 × 240 × 11 mm natural-clay wall tile, carton-and-pallet packing and exterior wall decoration. Its “fireproof” or firebrick wording, other generic performance claims and incomplete “GB/T19001-2000/ISO9001:200” reference do not establish current reaction-to-fire, component, cavity or whole-wall performance.

Replace “fireproof” with defined criteria

The responsible fire and facade professionals should state the applicable regulations, standards, building type, height, location and required classifications. Record whether the concern is material contribution to fire, fire resistance of a wall, cavity fire spread, external fire exposure or another defined scenario.

Avoid absolute language. Even where one facing has a favourable classification, adhesives, anchors, rails, membranes, insulation, sheathing, framing, joints and penetrations can govern wall behaviour. The specification should name the method, result, field of application and evidence required for the actual build-up.

Set evidence gateways for design approval, procurement, installation and handover. Identify the party authorised to interpret classifications or assessments and the process for resolving gaps. This keeps a preliminary product sheet from becoming the accidental fire basis for a developed wall.

Distinguish material, component and assembly evidence

Material or product

A reaction-to-fire result applies under a defined test and classification scope to the identified specimen.

Cladding component

Geometry, thickness, attachment and backing may affect how a facing is represented or classified.

Wall assembly

Fire resistance or external-wall performance concerns a tested or assessed combination of layers and details.

Project interfaces

Openings, cavities, floor lines, parapets and penetrations require evidence and detailing within the fire strategy.

Do not move a result from one level to another. A product document cannot automatically rate an untested wall, and an assembly report cannot automatically cover substitutions outside its stated field of application.

Define the complete wall construction

Issue sections and schedules identifying the clay facing, joint or open-joint condition, attachment, substrate, cavity, insulation, membranes, sheathing, framing and internal lining. Include dimensions, densities or product codes where the evidence depends on them. Resolve whether the tile is adhered, mechanically supported or incorporated by another route.

Coordinate structural loads, moisture, drainage, ventilation, thermal movement and durability alongside fire. A fire-compliant concept still needs safe attachment and water management, while a technically sound rainscreen or adhered finish still needs the required fire evidence.

Record the difference between design intent and evidence-critical parameters. Some dimensions or component identities may have limited permitted variation, while others can be adjusted through an authorised process. The project team should define that boundary before tender alternatives arrive.

Verify current evidence and its limitations

Request current reports, classifications or assessments identifying the standard, laboratory or competent issuer, date, specimen, thickness, finish, mounting, substrate, joints, result and scope. Check the offered product code and every relevant assembly layer against those documents. Record expiry or surveillance conditions where applicable.

Where project details differ, obtain review through the responsible qualified parties rather than assuming equivalence. A quality-management certificate does not establish reaction to fire or fire resistance. The archived generic word “firebrick” also does not mean refractory brick, direct-flame suitability or an assembly rating.

Coordinate cavities, openings and transitions

Develop details for cavity barriers or fire stopping where required, floor lines, compartment boundaries, windows, doors, vents, penetrations, parapets, bases and transitions to other wall types. Show continuity, support and interfaces without relying on notes that cannot be built or inspected.

Check how movement, drainage and ventilation interact with fire details. A blocked drainage route or discontinuous barrier can result from resolving each discipline in isolation. Use coordinated drawings and responsibility schedules so supply and installation boundaries are explicit.

Sequence concealed work so the responsible inspector can see supports, joints and interfaces before closure. Define acceptable records for inaccessible areas and a process for nonconformity. Later photographs cannot reliably compensate for missing dimensions, labels or inspection references.

Control mock-ups, installation and substitutions

Use a technical mock-up to confirm buildability, fixing, joints, barriers, openings and interfaces; do not treat a visual panel as fire testing. Establish inspection points for substrate, concealed layers, attachment, cavity details and penetrations before they are covered. Keep photographic and written records tied to drawing revisions.

Require formal review for changes to the tile body, thickness, finish, adhesive, anchor, rail, membrane, insulation, sheathing or fire-stopping product. Availability or visual similarity is not a technical basis for substitution. Update evidence and coordinated details before accepting a change.

Release and hand over an evidence-linked wall

The order and submittal package should connect current product code, drawing, finish range, wall sections, components, fire documents, project details, quantities, specials, inspection plan and programme. Identify which party supplies each layer and which party confirms its compliance and installation.

At handover, retain final drawings, product and assembly evidence, approved substitutions, concealed-work records, installed locations, maintenance and inspection guidance. Review the current exterior wall tile range and wall-cladding gallery only as starting points before formal verification.
