Terracotta panels for exterior walls should be briefed as an architectural material within a defined facade application. Start with the reason for choosing terracotta
Write the design purpose in project language. In a rainscreen arrangement, terracotta is normally the outer screen rather than the sole air, water or thermal layer. The wall brief must separately identify the backing construction, air and water control, insulation, cavity drainage, flashings, fire provisions, windows, penetrations and movement joints. Assign designers and installers at every interface.

Resolve interfaces and appearance in a representative mock-up
The mock-up should include typical panels, the approved colour range, joints, rails, corners, an opening, flashings, adjacent materials and at least one special condition.
