Rainscreen evolution · system decisions and evidence
Terracotta rainscreen progress is measured by a coordinated wall, not a slogan
The practical shift is from treating cladding as an outer product to defining a complete load path, water-management route, thermal/cavity strategy, movement mechanism, interface package and maintenance plan for the actual building.
A rainscreen is a layered system
The useful concept retained from the old article is that rainscreen is not one product. The outer cladding can reduce direct rain reaching inner layers, while joints, cavity, flashings and drainage routes manage water that passes the outer face. The backing wall’s air/water control and every interface remain part of the project design.

Cavity, water and thermal work
Ventilation/drainage paths, flashings, membranes, insulation, cavity barriers, penetrations and continuity at interfaces.
Backing structure and access
Verified substrate/structure, design actions, deflection, installation access, inspection zones and maintenance ownership.
| Decision | Required project input | Evidence/owner to identify |
|---|---|---|
| Design basis | Location, height, geometry, exposure, wind/seismic/impact and movement criteria where applicable | Issued project criteria and responsible facade/structural design parties |
| Product definition | Current panel code, section, dimensions, surface, orientation, tolerances and proposed supports | Controlled supplier data, samples and coordinated drawings |
| Load path | Panel engagement through clips/rails/brackets/anchors to verified backing structure | Calculations, component/assembly evidence and interface responsibility |
| Water path | Joints, cavity, flashings, membranes, drainage outlets, openings and terminations | Complete details, mock-up/evaluation where required and installation inspection |
| Fire/cavity strategy | Exact wall build-up, insulation/membranes, cavity barriers, fire stopping and penetrations | Current evidence and approvals applicable to that build-up and jurisdiction |
| Handover | As-built locations, access, baseline inspection, cleaning, damage response, spares and replacement | Maintenance manual, records and named owner/contractor responsibilities |
Design flexibility needs controlled inputs
Terracotta rainscreen design can vary by module, orientation, colour, texture, groove/relief, printed or glazed appearance and custom edge/return conditions when a current product route supports them. Flexibility is useful only when it remains connected to fabrication limits, system geometry, tolerances and approved samples.
The 2016 source contains no digital-production, digital-inkjet, automation or mass-customization facts. This guide therefore makes no historical technology claim. If a current project proposes printed artwork or digitally controlled production, request the actual artwork/data workflow, repeat logic, sample approval, equipment/process record and replacement-file controls rather than inferring them from this old page.
Project decision workflow
Issue the performance and responsibility brief
Define the building zones, actions, movement, water, thermal, fire/cavity, appearance, impact/safety, access and service requirements. Name who designs and reviews each interface rather than leaving “the rainscreen supplier” as an undefined owner.
Select one current panel configuration
Coordinate the item, section, dimensions, orientation, surface and support arrangement. Evidence for another thickness, profile, finish, fixing or backing structure does not automatically transfer.
Resolve module, joints and edges together
Set out grid, joint widths, corners, parapets, bases, soffits, openings, penetrations and transitions. Check manufacturable sizes, tolerances, subframe zones, replacement clearances and the visual result with identified physical samples.
Make water and movement continuous
Trace drainage and air/water-control continuity through flashings and interfaces. Coordinate building drift, support deflection, thermal effects and installation tolerances without unintended panel contact, restraint or disengagement.
Close the evidence gate
Use project-specific calculations, current product/system documents and representative tests or mock-ups required by the contract and jurisdiction. Record the exact product/configuration, method, edition, results, limits and approving party for each document.
Control production, installation and service
Link approved samples and drawings to production/batch records, packaging, installed locations and nonconformance close-out. Plan inspection, cleaning, access and replacement; the wall is not maintenance-free.
Historical statements that require a source before reuse
The August 2016 article presented a short timeline and benefit list without citations or project files. They are preserved here as audit context, not verified milestones or performance facts.
- “1982, Germany”
- The old page called this the first clay rainscreen installation. It provided no building, designer, manufacturer or source, so the date is not used as a confirmed industry milestone.
- “1999, US”
- The old page called this the first US clay rainscreen installation. It likewise supplied no project or source; retain only as an attributed 2016 statement.
- Water management
- The concept of deflecting, draining and allowing drying is retained at system level, but no universal watertightness or drying result is promised.
- Maintenance
- The former “low or no maintenance” and water-only cleaning statements are removed. Surface, stain, joints, access and project maintenance requirements must be defined.
- Energy and mould
- No project model, monitored result or assembly evidence supported reduced energy, longer life or prevention of mould/mildew. These outcomes are not claimed.
- Standards/environment
- No standard, certificate, EPD/LCA or defined environmental criterion accompanied the old compliance and “green” wording. Current documents are required when those decisions matter.
Claims the project evidence must replace
- Do not describe the system as maintenance-free, universally economical, mould-proof, pollution-proof, waterproof or automatically energy-saving.
- Do not call a panel or complete wall fireproof or environmentally preferable without current evidence that matches the exact scope and jurisdiction.
- Do not claim compliance with unnamed “international standards.” State the applicable document, edition, product/assembly scope, result and validity.
- Do not convert the unexplained “TA” letters or the uncited 1982/1999 dates into a new brand, technology or verified history.
- Do not release production or installation while product, support, water, cavity/fire or backing-structure responsibilities remain unassigned.
