Read the showroom as a sequence, not a product specification

The architect’s published description frames the store as a gallery rather than a conventional row of displays. Curves, diagonals and semi-enclosed volumes form multiple routes and pockets, while arched niches and openings connect the red screen walls with lighter, grey surfaces. Sculptures and home-decor objects become part of the spatial sequence.

Layered views

Perforations and aligned openings reveal several spaces at once. A project brief should define which views are meant to be open, screened or framed from each approach and eye level.

Curves and thresholds

Changing radii, diagonals and portals guide movement and create display zones. Coordinate clear widths, accessible routes, corners, floor transitions and the relationship between freestanding and fixed elements.

Material contrast

Warm red units sit beside concrete-textured forms, pale surfaces, planting and gravel. Approve the actual clay colour range, joint tone, adjacent finishes and lighting together rather than from an isolated sample.

Comfort, familiarity, cultural resonance and beauty are design intentions or interpretations, not universal material properties. Test them through the client brief, user and accessibility review, representative lighting, physical samples and a full-size mock-up. The photographs do not establish thermal, acoustic, ventilation, privacy, fire, structural, impact or environmental performance.

Do not scale from the photographs. The archive does not publish a brick SKU, unit size, joint width, curve radius, wall height, support or fixing detail. Select and engineer a current product for the actual geometry, loads, substrate, use and regulations; the pictured construction is not a universal approved method.

Coordinate openings, movement and public interaction

Perforated brickwork changes the relationship between weight, openings and contact. Resolve every portal, free edge, return, junction and top condition with the responsible architect and engineer. Coordinate setting-out tolerances, cumulative dimensional variation, cut or special units, joint continuity, differential movement and transitions to frames or monolithic elements.

Interface review before approval

  • clear egress and accessible circulation through the final display layout;
  • stability and retention under applicable permanent, imposed, impact and seismic actions;
  • protection against sharp edges, loose units, climbing, pulling and overturning where the public can touch the installation;
  • independent support for shelving, artwork, merchandise, lighting or services unless the designed wall is explicitly verified for those loads;
  • movement accommodation at the structure, floors, ceilings, openings, long runs and adjacent materials;
  • fire classification, compartment/egress implications and concealed materials for the exact installation; and
  • inspection, cleaning, repair and replacement access without destabilising adjacent work.

Test light, privacy and environmental claims at the right scale

A hollow unit can create partial views and patterned light, but the result depends on opening ratio, wall depth, orientation, external or internal light sources, viewing angle and the spaces on both sides. Define daylight, glare, privacy, display-lighting and ventilation objectives separately, then verify them with drawings, models and mock-ups. An open pattern does not automatically provide useful ventilation, solar control, acoustic privacy or environmental comfort.

Likewise, red clay appearance or an “earthy” design narrative does not establish low environmental impact. Where environmental claims are required, request current product-specific documentation covering the declared product and plant, raw materials, additives, drying and firing energy/fuel, emissions, yield and waste, packaging, transport, installation materials, maintenance, service-life scenario and realistic end-of-life route. Do not infer recyclability, health, low energy or “natural comfort” from the photographs.

Turn the visual reference into a project brief

Begin with a dimensioned plan and elevations that identify circulation, display functions, viewing axes, public contact, openings and interfaces. Select current sample units only after the intended wall or screen use is agreed. Develop a representative corner or curved segment at full size, including base, top, return, opening, joint, support and adjacent finish.

Do not assume that any current item matches The TerraMater units; confirm model, dimensions, intended use, evidence and availability. Develop a verifiable terracotta screen concept

Share the project location and use, screen geometry and dimensions, interior/exterior exposure, circulation and public-contact conditions, substrate and support concept, fire and structural requirements, desired colour/pattern, quantities, programme, mock-up scope and applicable standards.
