A project brief for architectural terracotta manufacturing

Manufacturer selection starts with a clear, testable project brief rather than a generic keyword claim. This checklist organizes the panel reference, samples, dimensions, facade-system evidence, quantity, programme and approval records needed for a current architectural terracotta review. Start with the project requirement, not a generic manufacturer label

“Exterior terracotta panel” can refer to different profiles, dimensions, surfaces and support arrangements. A useful enquiry identifies the building location, elevations, intended panel orientation, module, colour and texture direction, preliminary quantity, required standards, delivery destination and programme. These inputs allow a current feasibility review without assuming that an archived item remains available.

Define responsibilities at the same time. The architect establishes appearance and interfaces; qualified project professionals verify structure, fire, water, thermal, acoustic and regulatory requirements; the manufacturer reviews the selected panel against current production information. Shop drawings, support design and site installation still require project-specific approval.

Evidence boundary: a product photograph and an old model number do not establish allowable size, structural capacity, fire classification, weather resistance, thermal or acoustic performance, environmental credentials, maintenance needs or current lead time.

Preserve the surface references, then approve current samples

The original selection board records PM820, PM826, PM552, PM550, PM259, PM255, PM554, PM256 and PM258. These nine identifiers remain readable in the complete image. They are archive references only and should not be treated as current SKUs or exact present-day colour matches.

For a new project, approve representative samples under relevant light and viewing distance. Review intended variation, print or texture scale, pattern repetition, panel orientation, joints, cut pieces, corners and transitions. Record the approved sample range and how units will be blended across the elevation.

Build a manufacturing and specification brief

Panel definition

State the proposed product reference, profile, length and height, thickness, orientation, surface, colour range and any edge or corner requirements. Identify which dimensions are fixed and which remain under review.

Elevation and quantity

Provide coordinated elevations and a preliminary schedule showing module counts, special pieces, openings and interfaces. Separate estimated net area from allowances, spares and replacement stock.

System coordination

Define the structural substrate, support concept, cavity, insulation, membranes, flashings, fire barriers and movement strategy. Panel manufacture does not replace facade engineering or installation design.

Evidence and acceptance

List applicable standards, required product or assembly reports, visual criteria, dimensional tolerances, mock-up requirements, inspection points, packaging and identification records.

Programme and logistics

State sample, approval, production and site dates; delivery destination; unloading limits; packaging needs; sequence; storage and replacement strategy. Current lead time follows the confirmed scope and quotation.

Change control

Record approved revisions and substitutions. Recheck appearance, dimensions, supports, tests and programme whenever the panel, finish, factory route or wall assembly changes.

Minimum information for a current manufacturer review

  • project location, building use, exposure and applicable codes;
  • elevations, sections, interfaces and preliminary panel schedule;
  • target module, surface, colour range and visual reference;
  • structural, fire, water, thermal and acoustic requirements;
  • required current reports, classifications, samples and mock-up;
  • estimated quantity, spares, programme and delivery destination; and
  • responsibility matrix for design, approval, manufacture and installation.
