Architectural terracotta is a family of fired-clay building products rather than one universal panel. It can provide flat cladding, linear screening, brick-scale texture or purpose-made profiles. Choosing well means matching the product family to the architectural role, support concept, exposure, performance criteria and production realities.
What architectural terracotta means
Terracotta literally describes fired earth, but the architectural category covers many clay bodies, forming methods, sections and finishes. Some units are extruded as hollow profiles; others are pressed, moulded or made with craft-led surface variation. Glazed and unglazed products can both belong to the family. The material name alone does not establish dimensions, strength, absorption, fire performance or suitability for a particular wall.
Separate modern rainscreen products from historic glazed architectural terra cotta. Both use fired clay, yet their construction and conservation questions can be very different. A contemporary panel on an engineered rail system should not be used as a generic model for an early hollow masonry unit, embedded anchor or ornamental block.
Map the main product families
Rainscreen panels
Flat or profiled hollow units create larger facade fields on a mechanically fixed support system, with joints and a drained cavity coordinated behind.
Baguettes and louvers
Linear tubes or fins form open screens, balustrade-like compositions or decorative layers; their span, orientation and connections need engineering.
Wall tiles and brick slips
Smaller fired-clay facing units produce a bonded or mechanically retained brick-scale surface, depending on the selected system and substrate.
Special shapes
Corners, copings, reveals, fins, perforated units and sculpted profiles resolve transitions or create a project-specific architectural language.
These families can share a colour direction while using different bodies, thicknesses or firing positions. A coordinated palette therefore needs physical samples and production review; a colour name or digital image is not enough to guarantee a match between product types.
Understand how form and finish are created
Clay preparation, forming, drying and firing influence the final dimensions, surface and colour range. Extrusion is efficient for repeated sections, while special moulding may suit relief or complex geometry. Every proposed profile must dry and fire without unacceptable distortion, so an attractive drawing still requires manufacturing feasibility review.
Natural clay colours, engobes and glazes offer different visual effects. Smooth, grooved, sanded, combed and textured faces change how light reveals the surface. Glaze can introduce gloss, depth and deliberate variation, but its specification should address colour range, edge coverage and the relevant exposure. Describe the finish with approved samples, measurable tolerances and viewing conditions rather than words such as “perfectly uniform.”
Choose by architectural role
Use the elevation concept to decide scale and depth. Large panel modules can produce calm horizontal or vertical fields. Brick slips create finer coursing and work around smaller openings. Baguettes add transparency and shadow. Special pieces may preserve material continuity at corners and reveals, but they can introduce tooling, minimum quantities and longer replacement lead times.
The legacy 2015 article gave panel maxima of 1,800 by 600 millimetres and a broad thickness range. Those figures are archived product guidance, not current universal limits. Available size depends on the panel section, orientation, finish, plant capability, structural demand, handling and project quantity. Specify evidence, not generic benefits
Claims such as lightweight, fast to install or highly durable appeared in the old overview. They are comparisons without a defined alternative, assembly or test condition. A useful specification instead names the evidence needed for the project: dimensional tolerances, breaking or flexural strength, water absorption, freeze–thaw resistance where relevant, reaction to fire, colour or glaze behaviour, and system structural performance.
Confirm the applicable standards and acceptance thresholds for the project jurisdiction. Product tests and wall-system evidence answer different questions. Panels, anchors, rails, joints, membranes, insulation and cavity barriers must be coordinated, while adhered tiles require compatible substrate preparation, bonding, movement and moisture details.
Treat conservation as its own discipline
Historic terracotta can show cracking, spalling, glaze loss, failed joints, moisture-related staining or distress around corroding supports. The correct response begins with a condition survey and investigation, not immediate replacement. The U.S. General Services Administration’s terra-cotta guidance calls for project-specific specifications and assessment of units, joints, support systems and overall facade stability.
Conservation teams should identify causes of deterioration, stabilise unsafe material and decide what can be retained, repaired or must be replaced. New units may need to match documented geometry, colour, texture and glaze range, but visual similarity does not remove the need for compatible anchors, movement, water shedding and specialist approval. Modern facade products should not be presented as automatic one-for-one substitutes.
Build a useful product brief
Start with building location, application, elevations, module, finish intent, quantities and programme. Add exposure, design actions, support concept, required tests, allowable tolerances, corner and opening details, packaging constraints, mock-up scope and spare-material strategy. Early discussion of special shapes and batch planning helps align design ambition with tooling and firing schedules.
